Located in northwestern Hunan Province (湖南省), Changde (常德), anciently known as Wuling (武陵) and Langzhou (朗州), is a prefecture-level city and an important regional center in western Hunan. Situated near Dongting Lake (洞庭湖), with the Wuling Mountains (武陵山) and Xuefeng Mountains (雪峰山) to the west and Hubei Province to the north, Changde has long been known as “the throat of Sichuan and Guizhou, and the gateway to Yunnan and Guizhou.” Today, it is an important city within the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Dongting Lake Eco-economic Circle, combining natural landscapes, ethnic traditions, and historical culture.

    Why Visit Changde?

A Gateway of Mountains, Lakes and Rivers: Changde enjoys a unique geographical location surrounded by mountains, rivers, and lakes. Located close to Dongting Lake (洞庭湖) and the Yuan River, the city features beautiful wetland landscapes, rural scenery, and mountain views. The combination of lake ecology, river landscapes, and the Wuling mountain area makes Changde an attractive destination for nature lovers, photographers, and travelers seeking peaceful countryside experiences.

Colorful Ethnic Culture and Traditional Customs: Changde is a culturally diverse region with more than 45 ethnic groups, including Miao (苗族), Tujia (土家族), Yao (瑶族), Dong (侗族), Hui (回族), and Bai (白族) communities. The city preserves rich ethnic traditions, including folk festivals, traditional music, handicrafts, local architecture, and unique lifestyles. These diverse cultural elements create a fascinating atmosphere for visitors exploring the villages and communities of western Hunan.

Rich Religious and Cultural Heritage: Changde has a long history of religious development, with Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholicism, and Christianity all having a presence in the region. Temples, religious buildings, and cultural sites reflect the city’s long history of cultural exchanges and demonstrate the diversity of traditional beliefs and practices in western Hunan.

Taohuayuan Scenic Area – The Legendary Peach Blossom Land: The most famous attraction in Changde is Taohuayuan Scenic Area (桃花源风景区), a landscape inspired by the famous Chinese literary work The Peach Blossom Spring by Tao Yuanming. Located between the Yuan River and the Wuling Mountains, the area features ancient villages, traditional buildings, green forests, streams, and peaceful countryside scenery. Its unique environment combines the beauty of Dongting Lake, the charm of western Hunan, and the natural elegance of the Wuling mountain region, making it one of the most poetic destinations in China.

Authentic Western Hunan Travel Experience: Beyond its famous scenic areas, Changde offers travelers opportunities to experience traditional rural life, local cuisine, folk customs, and natural landscapes away from crowded tourist destinations. With its combination of ethnic culture, religious heritage, mountains, rivers, and historical landscapes, Changde is an ideal destination for travelers seeking an authentic journey through the cultural and natural beauty of Hunan.
