Why is Lin Zexu Museum So Special?

The contents of the exhibition are divided into four parts: Lin Zexu’s life, the world pioneer in drug control, Lin Zexu’s life in Yili and his integrity. The theme of the exhibition is Lin Zexu’s life, his anti-smoking and anti-british activities and his exile in Yili. More than 1,000 items are displayed, highlighting Lin Zexu’s great patriotism and the great achievements of the world pioneer in drug control. It was opened to the public free of charge in March 2008.

Located at No.1 Fuzhou Road, Yining Economic Cooperation Zone, it covers an area of 10,000 square meters, a construction area of 2,000 square meters and an exhibition hall area of 800 square meters. The theme of the exhibition is Lin Zexu’s life and his exile in Yili.

Main Attraction of Lin Zexu Museum

Lin Zexu is a great patriot, an outstanding national hero and a world pioneer in drug control in modern Chinese history.

More than 100 years ago, when western colonialism invaded China with opium and gunboats, despite the obstruction and calumny of the capitulationists, he resolutely presided over the selling of cigarettes at Humen in Guangzhou, setting up the first banner of the Chinese people’s resistance to the invasion of western colonialism, safeguarding the interests and dignity of the Chinese nation, and demonstrating his heroic spirit and national righteousness in fighting foreign invaders. However, due to the corruption and incompetence of the Qing government, Lin zexu became guilty of resisting Britain and was exiled to Yili in February 1842.

During his three-year stay in Xinjiang, he cherished the lofty patriotic belief of “living and dying for the benefit of the nation, but avoiding fate because of misfortune and fortune”. Despite political adversities, he actively donated the Huangqu Longkou Project, fulfilled the requirements of southern Xinjiang, promoted advanced production technology, cared about border defense and the sufferings of ethnic minorities, and was loved and admired by the people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang.

In order to commemorate this great historical figure and carry forward Lin Zexu’s great patriotic spirit, in 1992 the Yili prefectural party Committee of the CPC decided to build the Yili Lin Zexu memorial hall. Since the memorial hall was opened in 1994, it has received hundreds of thousands of tourists from home and abroad. In 1995, it was named “Patriotism Education Base at Autonomous District Level”. It has become an important window and tourist attraction for Ili’s opening to the outside world and cultural exchanges. Chen Yunhe praised “Lin Zexu’s service to the common people in reclaiming wasteland and guarding the border Ili people welcome the great heroes to create Xinjiang”.

Since the establishment of the museum, the construction of the memorial hall has received the care and support of the parties and governments at all levels and the units and individuals concerned with the public cause of forests. In 1999 and 2002, the Yili state government and the relevant units and individuals invested 400,000 yuan to repair the memorial hall. In 2005, the National Anti-drug Commission, the Autonomous Region Public Security Department and the Propaganda Department of the Autonomous Region Party Committee invested 1.8 million yuan in the reconstruction and expansion, and named it the Autonomous Prefecture Anti-drug Education Base.
