    Overview

    Gansu (甘肃), formerly romanized as Kansu, is a province located in the northwest of the People’s Republic of China. Gansu lies strategically between the Tibetan Plateau and the Loess Plateau and shares borders with several regions:

    • Mongolia (Govi-Altai Province) and Inner Mongolia to the north
    • Ningxia to the north
    • Xinjiang and Qinghai to the west
    • Sichuan to the south
    • Shaanxi to the east

    The Yellow River flows through the southern part of the province, adding to its scenic and historical importance.

    Historical Significance

    Gansu holds an important place in Chinese history. The State of Qin, which later founded the Qin Dynasty, originated in what is now southeastern Gansu. The Northern Silk Road passed through the Hexi Corridor in Gansu, making the province a key historical route for trade and cultural exchange between China and the West.
