Tongren is such a marvelous place that holds beautiful landscapes, as well as the rich and colorful ethnic minority customs culture.
Ethnic Groups
The city covers an area of 18,000 square kilometers, inhabited by 29 ethnic groups like Tujia, Han, Miao, Dong, Gelao and Manchu. Among them, the Tujia people account for nearly 40% of the total population, and ethnic minorities take up 70.45% of the total population.

Local Culture and Custom
- Red Culture: Tongren is a famous old revolutionary base. In 1934, He Long and Guan Xiangying founded the eastern Guizhou revolutionary base in Tongren, one of the eight red bases in China before the red army's long march. There are Former Residence of Zhou Yiqun(周逸群故居), Former Site of Revolutionary Committee in East Guizhou Special District, Fengxiangxi Conference Site(枫香溪会议会址) and other provincial cultural protection units.
- Ethnic festivals: Tongren is home to 29 ethnic groups including Tujia, Han, Miao, Dong, Gelao and Man. There are colorful ethnic festivals in Tongren, such as “Si Yue Ba(the Eighth of the Fourth Lunar Month Festival)” of Miao, “Guo Gan Nian(过赶年) of Tujia, “Gan Ao Festival(赶坳节)” of Dong, “Dear Condor Day(敬雀节)” and “Mao Long Festival(毛龙节)”of Gelao, etc.
- Buddhist Culture: Mount Fanjing, a famous Buddhist mountain located in Tongren, was added to the world natural heritage list at the world heritage conference on July 2, 2018.
- National Intangible Cultural Heritage: National intangible cultural heritages in Tongren include Dejiang Nuo Tang Opera(德江傩堂戏), Sinan Huadeng Opera(思南花灯戏), Shiqian Puppet Show(石阡木偶戏), the technique of Making Flute, etc.
