The woolen embroidery is one of the emerging traditional arts and crafts in Shanghai, which is a kind of art and craftsmanship embroidered on a special mesh burlap with colored wool. The products are rich in color, harmonious in color matching, excellent in embroidery art, distinctive nuance, vivid in shape and image. On May 23, 2011, Shanghai Woolen Embroidery was approved by the State Council to be included in the third batch of national intangible cultural heritage.
3. Gu Embroidery(顾绣)
Gu embroidery is a style of Chinese decorative needlework that originated during the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and was very popular in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The embroidery is worked with fine floss silk thread in various colors on a silk background. The motifs of Gu embroidery are taken from nature and historical incidences and it is said that they were originally based on classic ink brush paintings from earlier periods (especially the Song and Yuan Dynasties). Traditionally, Gu embroidery is associated with Miao Ruiyan, a concubine of the eldest son of a senior official named Gu Mingshi. The family lived first in Songjiang, Jiangsu Province and later in Shanghai. On May 20, 2006, Gu Embroidery was approved by the State Council of the China to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage.
4. Jinshan Peasant Painting(金山农民画)
Fengjing, in the Jinshan district of Shanghai, is one of the three most important towns for peasant painting in China. Handcrafted by farmers, the paintings incorporate folk art techniques such as paper cutting, embroidery, and wood carving, and their content includes pictures of gods and other auspicious images.
5. Flowers Painted on Cooking Bench(灶花)
Flowers Painted on Cooking Bench is the decorative pictures of kitchens in Nanhui regions. To paint various pictures and flower patterns in kitchen range is the folk custom of local people in Shanghai Nanhui areas. It is not only popular in Shanghai, but also spread to regions south of the Yangtze River. The history of flowers painted on cooking bench can be dated back to Song and Yuan Dynasties. Legend goes that people painted pictures on a stove to wish for a harvest. Generally, there is the kitchen god in the kitchen of people. 6. Sheshan Juicy Peach(佘山水蜜桃)
Sheshan produces more than 10 varieties of peaches, including early-, mid- or late-maturing cultivars. The peaches are available on the market for a long time.
