Haidong (海东) is a historic prefecture-level city in eastern Qinghai Province (青海省), located east of Qinghai Lake (青海湖) and along the important Huangshui River Valley (湟水河谷). As one of the earliest developed regions of Qinghai, Haidong has long served as a cultural and transportation link between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (青藏高原) and the Hexi Corridor (河西走廊). With ancient Buddhist heritage, diverse ethnic traditions, Yellow River landscapes, and beautiful plateau scenery, Haidong offers travelers a unique combination of history, nature, and cultural experiences.

    Why Visit Haidong?

Kumbum Monastery – Birthplace of Tibetan Buddhist Master Tsongkhapa: Kumbum Monastery (Ta’er Monastery, 塔尔寺) is Haidong’s most famous cultural landmark and one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism (藏传佛教格鲁派). Founded in 1583, it is regarded as the birthplace of Tsongkhapa (宗喀巴), the founder of the Gelug tradition. The monastery is famous for its magnificent Tibetan architecture, Buddhist statues, murals, butter sculptures, and religious festivals, attracting pilgrims and travelers from around the world.

Huangshui River Valley – Cradle of Qinghai Civilization: The Huangshui River Valley (湟水河谷) is the historical and cultural heart of eastern Qinghai. Surrounded by mountains and plateaus, the fertile valley has supported human settlement for thousands of years and played an important role in the development of the region. Visitors can explore traditional villages, agricultural landscapes, and historical sites while experiencing the unique environment where Tibetan, Han, Hui, and other cultures have interacted.

Ledu Ancient Cultural Heritage: Ledu District (乐都区) is one of the oldest cultural areas in Qinghai and has a long history connected with ancient civilizations along the upper reaches of the Yellow River (黄河). The area preserves historical sites, traditional architecture, and cultural relics that reflect the development of local communities and the evolution of eastern Qinghai’s history.

Liujiaxia and Yellow River Landscapes: The southern part of Haidong is influenced by the Yellow River (黄河), creating beautiful river valleys, reservoirs, cliffs, and plateau landscapes. The combination of flowing water, mountain scenery, and dramatic terrain provides excellent opportunities for photography and sightseeing. The region also connects with nearby Yellow River attractions in neighboring Gansu Province (甘肃省).

Ethnic Diversity and Traditional Culture: Haidong is home to diverse ethnic groups, including Han, Tibetan, Hui, Tu, and Salar communities. This cultural diversity is reflected in local festivals, religious traditions, architecture, handicrafts, music, and cuisine. Visitors can experience the unique customs and lifestyles of different communities living together on the Qinghai Plateau.

Tu Ethnic Culture – Unique Plateau Heritage: The Tu ethnic group (土族) has a strong cultural presence in Haidong, especially in areas such as Huzhu Tu Autonomous County (互助土族自治县). Travelers can experience traditional Tu villages, colorful costumes, folk performances, embroidery, and the famous Nadon Festival (纳顿节), which is often described as one of China’s longest-running harvest celebrations. These cultural experiences provide insight into one of Qinghai’s most distinctive ethnic traditions.

Mountain Landscapes and Outdoor Experiences: Haidong’s geography combines river valleys, mountains, forests, and plateau scenery. The surrounding areas offer opportunities for hiking, photography, countryside exploration, and visits to traditional villages. Located close to Xining (西宁), Haidong is also a convenient destination for travelers seeking to gradually adapt to the high-altitude environment while exploring Qinghai’s cultural landscapes.

Local Cuisine and Plateau Flavors: Haidong’s cuisine reflects the mixed cultural influences of Qinghai, combining Tibetan, Hui, Tu, and northwest Chinese traditions. Visitors can enjoy hand-pulled noodles, lamb dishes, yogurt, dairy products, Tibetan-style foods, and traditional Tu ethnic dishes. The local food culture reflects the region’s agricultural and pastoral lifestyle, offering travelers an authentic taste of eastern Qinghai.
