Located in northwestern Hubei Province (湖北省) along the Han River (汉江), Xiangyang (襄阳) is one of the most important historical cities in Central China. Known as a strategic military stronghold and cultural center, Xiangyang has a history of more than 2,800 years and played a significant role in ancient Chinese politics, warfare, and commerce. The city was formerly known as Xiangfan (襄樊) from 1950 to 2010 and today is one of the largest cities in Hubei Province.

    Why Visit Xiangyang?

    Ancient City & Historical Heritage

Xiangyang is famous for its deep historical background and well-preserved cultural heritage. The city developed from two historic areas: Xiangcheng (襄城) on the south bank of the Han River and Fancheng (樊城) on the north bank. The ancient Xiangyang City Wall (襄阳古城墙) is one of the best-preserved ancient city walls in China, offering visitors a chance to experience the atmosphere of a traditional Chinese defensive city.

Because of its location at the intersection of northern and southern China, Xiangyang was historically known as a key military center. It was an important battlefield during many periods of Chinese history, especially during the Three Kingdoms Period (三国时期) and later dynastic conflicts.

Three Kingdoms Culture & Zhuge Liang Heritage

Xiangyang is closely connected with the legends of the Three Kingdoms Period, one of the most popular historical eras in Chinese culture. The nearby Longzhong Scenic Area (隆中风景区) is traditionally regarded as the place where Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮) lived in seclusion before becoming strategist and advisor to Liu Bei. The famous story of the “Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage (三顾茅庐)” originated here, making Xiangyang an important destination for travelers interested in Chinese history and literature.

Han River Landscape & Riverside City Life

The Han River (汉江) flows through the center of Xiangyang and divides the city into Xiangcheng and Fancheng. The river has shaped the city’s development, culture, and transportation for centuries. Visitors can enjoy riverside walks, scenic views, bridges, and traditional neighborhoods that combine ancient charm with modern urban life.

    Strategic Location & Transportation Hub

Xiangyang has long been known as the “thoroughfare of the nine provinces” because of its important geographical position connecting central, northern, and western China. Today, it remains a major transportation and economic center in northwestern Hubei, with convenient railway, highway, and air connections that make it an ideal base for exploring surrounding destinations.

    Cultural Traditions & Local Cuisine

Xiangyang preserves rich local traditions influenced by Chu culture and Central Plains culture. The city is known for regional foods such as Xiangyang Beef Noodles (襄阳牛肉面), traditional snacks, and local culinary customs. Folk culture, historic neighborhoods, and festivals provide visitors with an authentic experience of Hubei’s regional lifestyle.

    Top Attractions in Xiangyang

Xiangyang Ancient City (襄阳古城) is the city’s most iconic historical landmark. Surrounded by the Han River and protected by strong defensive walls, the ancient city provides panoramic views of traditional architecture, old streets, and riverside scenery.

Longzhong Scenic Area (隆中风景区) is one of Xiangyang’s most famous cultural attractions. It commemorates Zhuge Liang and preserves temples, gardens, and historical sites connected with the Three Kingdoms stories.

Xiangyang Ancient City Wall (襄阳古城墙) offers visitors a glimpse into China’s ancient military architecture. Walking along the wall provides excellent views of the Han River and the historic city center.

Fancheng Ancient Town (樊城) represents the commercial and transportation history of the northern bank of the Han River. Historically an important trading center, it preserves traces of Xiangyang’s role as a regional economic hub.

Mi Gong Temple (米公祠) is a cultural site dedicated to Mi Fu (米芾), a famous Northern Song Dynasty calligrapher and painter. The temple showcases traditional Chinese calligraphy culture and classical architecture.

Xiangyang Museum (襄阳博物馆) displays archaeological discoveries, historical relics, and cultural exhibitions that introduce the city’s long history and regional development.

Xiangyang is a destination where ancient military history, Three Kingdoms legends, river landscapes, and traditional Hubei culture come together. From exploring the historic city walls and Zhuge Liang’s heritage sites to enjoying local cuisine and riverside scenery, Xiangyang offers travelers an authentic journey into the history and culture of central China.
