Located in northwestern Hubei Province (湖北省), Shiyan (十堰) is a mountain city known as the gateway to Wudang Mountain (武当山), one of China’s most important Taoist sacred sites. Surrounded by mountains and rivers, Shiyan combines Taoist culture, ancient architecture, natural landscapes, automobile industry heritage, and ecological tourism, making it a unique destination in western Hubei.

Wudang Mountain – Taoist Holy Land

The greatest attraction of Shiyan is Wudang Mountain (武当山), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous Taoist mountains in China. The mountain is renowned for its magnificent ancient temple complexes, traditional architecture, and deep connection with Taoist philosophy and martial arts. Visitors can explore landmarks such as Golden Summit (金顶), Purple Cloud Palace (紫霄宫), and ancient pathways surrounded by forests and misty peaks.

    Birthplace of Wudang Martial Arts

Shiyan is widely regarded as the center of Wudang martial arts (武当武术), a traditional Chinese martial art emphasizing balance, inner strength, and harmony between body and mind. Travelers can watch martial arts performances, participate in cultural experiences, and learn about the philosophy behind Wudang Tai Chi and Taoist practices.

    Danjiangkou Reservoir & Water Landscapes

The Danjiangkou Reservoir (丹江口水库), located near Shiyan, is one of the largest artificial freshwater lakes in China and an important source of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Surrounded by mountains, the reservoir offers beautiful lake scenery, boating experiences, photography opportunities, and peaceful countryside landscapes.

    Danjiangkou City & Ecological Tourism

The surrounding areas of Danjiangkou (丹江口) feature rich natural resources, including rivers, forests, and mountain villages. Visitors can enjoy eco-tours, explore traditional communities, and experience the harmony between water resources and local life.

Qinba Mountain Landscapes & Outdoor Adventures

Located near the Qinba Mountains (秦巴山脉), Shiyan offers excellent opportunities for hiking, nature exploration, and scenic driving. The region features forest-covered mountains, valleys, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife, making it suitable for outdoor travelers seeking peaceful natural environments.

    Automobile Industry Heritage

Shiyan is also known as an important center of China’s automobile industry and is often called the “Truck Capital of China.” The city developed around Dongfeng Motor (东风汽车) and has a unique industrial tourism identity. Visitors interested in engineering and modern Chinese industrial development can explore automobile museums and industrial heritage sites.

    Traditional Culture & Regional Cuisine

Shiyan’s culture combines Taoist traditions, Qinba mountain heritage, and Hubei regional customs. Local cuisine features mountain flavors, freshwater products, and traditional dishes influenced by the border area between Hubei, Henan, Shaanxi, and Chongqing.
