Why is Red Stone Forest National Geological Park So Special?
- Red Stone Forest National Geological Park is a very distinctive karst landform located in Guzhang County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. After entering the scenic spot, it is presented in front of the colorful and beautiful Qifeng Stone Forest.
- There are also canyons, streams, clear springs and lawns like weaving carpets. The ancient wisteria flowers and stone forests reflect each other. The crimson peaks are like raised humps, some like galloping horses, and various kinds of flying stones, natural bridges and so on.

Red Stone Forest National Geological Park (Chinese name: 红石林国家地质公园) is located in Guzhang County in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in the west of Hunan province. It faces the beautiful Furong Ancient Town on the other bank of Youshui River, and is sited on the way between Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang Ancient Town. So you can add Furong Ancient Town and Red Stone Forest National Geological Park into your itinerary if you travel from Zhangjiajie to Fenghuang or vice versa. It is the only carbonate stone forest in red found so far in China. Other stone forests in China are usually in gray color.
Highlights of Red Stone Forest National Geological Park
The park outstands with its deep caves and miles of red carbonate-rock stones whose color changes with weather and temperature. In summer with hot sun, its color turns into fiery red. During cloudy day, it would be maroon and purple. However in heavy rainy day, it is black. It is also of high value in geological research, aesthetic appreciation, and tourism, with karst typographies,canyons, caves, lakes and waterfalls all gathering here. Folk customs and arts such as original ecological dances “Maogusi” and “hand-waving” are included in the intangible cultural heritage of state level, further adding luster to the park.
Best Time to Visit Xiangxi
To travel in Xiangxi, there is no obvious best time due to the agreeable weather all year round. If have to choose a best time, maybe it is from July to September with celebrated ethnic festivals of Miao people, the Songs Festival on the sixth day of lunar June and the Autumn Festival on the 13th Chinese solar term, Liqiu, which means the beginning of the autumn and falls generally on August 8th or 9th.

If you come from Zhangjiajie, you may take a bus at Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station (near to Zhangjiajie Railway Station) to reach Red Stone Forest Tourist Center in Furong Town first. The buses run every one hour from 7:00am to 5:00pm and take about 2 hours. Then rent a minibus or motorcycle to take you to the entrance of Red Stone Forest National Geological Park, which takes 20 minutes.
If you come from Jishou City, you may take bus at Jishou Xikou Bus Station to reach Wangcun Bus Station(王村汽车站 in Chinese) first. The buses departs every 30 minutes from 8:30am to 6:30pm and takes about 1 hours. Then walk to Red Stone Forest Tourist Center in Furong Town to rent a minibus or motorcycle to take you to the entrance of Red Stone Forest National Geological Park, which takes 20 minutes.
