Tengchong Festivals and Events

There are 25 minorities living in Tengchong City, including Dai, Hui, Lisu, Wa, Bai, Achang, etc. Different ethnic groups create a diverse and unique customs after a long time. They are different in architecture, costume and etiquette. Here are some major festivals in Tengchong.

1.Spring Festival

The Spring festival is the greatest festival of the Chinese on Chinese lunar calendar. In different parts of China,people may celebrate the festival in different ways. The atmosphere of the New Year in Tengchong is also very strong.

2. Knife-ladder-Climbing Festival of Lisu

The Knife-ladder-Climbing Festival of Lisu Ethnic Group, which is called "a-tang-de" in Lisu language with the meaning of "a festival of climbing knife-ladders", is a traditional festival of the Lisu people and Yi people. It is held on the 15th day of the first month of every lunar year.

3.Woluo Festival of Achang

On each lunar February 4th, the Achang ethnic minority holds the Woluo Festival, one of the important traditional festivals of the Achang people. In Achang language, “Woluo” means amusement near the house. Legend has it that this festival is held to memorize the primogenitor that created the world.

4. Kuoshi Festival of Lisu

Every year on December 20th, people from the Lisu Ethnic Group begin celebrating their most important festival, Kuoshi, which means New Year. It's equivalent to the Han people's Spring Festival. 

5. Lantern Festival

The Lantern Festival or the Spring Lantern Festival is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunar Chinese calendar. On the day of the Lantern Festival, Tengchong is bustling, with various kinds of lanterns hanging in front of each house and traditional "guessing lantern riddles" activity.

Activities of Tengchong

1. Sea of Flowers Festival

One hundred thousand acres of canola flowers bloom into a sea in the town of Jietou in Tengchong every February. Every year, the festival has wonderful activities including dance, music performance, cycling and running.

2. Duanyang Flower Bazaar

Just like Baoshan city, Tengchong also has Duanyang Flower Bazaar. You'll be marveled at the superb artistry of the flower breeders. 

3. Tengchong Volcano Hot Spring Cultural Tourism Festival

During this festival, you may enjoy the epic performance for the opening ceremony as well as colorful ethnic and folk performances. In addition, folk performances such as lion dancing, Dongjing (scripture cave) music, Lisu singing and tea art will be held, where you may enjoy the feast of Tengyue culture.
