  • Where is the Yangtze River in China?

    2019-08-10admin2641 wordsAbout 9 minutes

The Yangtze River (长江), also known as the Changjiang (长江), is the longest river in China and the third-longest river in the world. It flows from the Tibetan Plateau in the west to the East China Sea in the east, making its way across a vast geographical range.

    Origin of the Yangtze River

The Yangtze River begins in the Tibetan Plateau (西藏高原) in Qinghai Province (青海省), where it is known as the Jinsha River (金沙江). The river starts at an elevation of about 4,900 meters (16,100 feet) and flows eastward across the southwestern part of China.

    Course of the Yangtze River

The Yangtze River travels through 11 provinces and municipalities in China, flowing from west to east and passing through a variety of terrains, landscapes, and urban centers.

    Upper Reaches:

    • The river starts in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and enters Sichuan Province (四川省). The river flows through cities such as Panzhihua (攀枝花), Yibin (宜宾), and Luzhou (泸州) before entering Chongqing (重庆市).

    Middle Reaches:

    • The river continues into Hubei Province (湖北省), where it flows through key cities like Yichang (宜昌), Jingzhou (荆州), and Wuhan (武汉). It also passes through Hunan (湖南省), with the city of Yueyang (岳阳), and into Jiangxi Province (江西省) near Jiujiang (九江).

    Lower Reaches:

    • The river flows into Anhui Province (安徽省) and Jiangsu Province (江苏省), through cities such as Nanjing (南京), Yangzhou (扬州), and Suzhou (苏州). Finally, the Yangtze empties into the East China Sea at the Shanghai (上海) metropolitan area, where it widens significantly to form the Yangtze River Delta.

    Key Geographical Features

    • Yangtze River Gorges: The river passes through the Three Gorges (三峡) in Hubei Province, known for their dramatic cliffs and natural beauty. The Qutang Gorge (瞿塘峡), Wu Gorge (巫峡), and Xiling Gorge (西陵峡) are some of the most famous sections of the river.

    • Yangtze River Delta: As the Yangtze flows toward the coast, it forms a large delta in Jiangsu and Shanghai, which is one of the most economically important regions in China.
