Why is Inner Mongolia Museum So Special?

This massive museum has a distinctive sloping roof supposed to resemble the vast steppes of Mongolia. It’s one of the better provincial museums, with a focus on Mongolian culture, from an excellent dinosaur exhibition to Genghis Khan and the space age. The museum is the only provincial comprehensive museum in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Administrative Region. With a total area of 15,000 square meters, the exhibition area is about 7, 000 square meters, boasting a good selection of Mongolian items and a historical lineage of this vast grassland. The white horse sculpture galloping on the top of the building implies the fortune and takeoff of Inner Mongolia.

What to See in Inner Mongolia Museum

There are four series of exhibits in Inner Mongolia Museum with a total collection of more than 100,000 pieces. These four series are Inner Mongolia Paleontologic fossils, Inner Mongolia historical relics, Inner Mongolia revolutionary relics and Inner Mongolia ethnic relics.

Inner Mongolia Paleontologic Fossils

Inner Mongolia is a famous region with dinosaur fossils and enjoys its laudatory title – “Home of Fossils”. Inner Mongolia Museum exhibits a large number of Paleontologic fossils. The fossils exhibited here are in great categories almost from every corner of Inner Mongolia in all paleontologic eras, and more important, they are all inconceivably well-preserved.

Inner Mongolia Historical Relics

The Crown of Xiongnu Tribe: Made of gold with a weight of 1,394 grams, it is a national treasure and the only gold crown of Xiongnu Chanyu (the monarch of the Xiongnu nationality) found so far. The crown is constituted of a golden eagle and cap band, and is embossed with a pattern of a sheep and a wolf. The eagle stands on the top of the hemispherical crown, watching the battle between the wolf and the sheep.

Inner Mongolia Revolutionary Relics

This series displays the Inner Mongolians revolutionary history from the May 4 Movement in 1919 to the foundation of the Republic of China on Oct 1, 1949. In 1922, the Communist Party of China specially appointed some important members to help Inner Mongolia to cultivate some excellent leaders, who have made great contribution later for the foundation of the Inner Mongolia Region on May 1, 1947.

Inner Mongolia Ethnic Relics

Feather Shaman Costume of Qing Dynasty: This costume shows the basic characteristics of Mongolian Shamanism with bird worship as its prominent feature. The front and back of the costume and sleeves are decorated with colored cloth strips. When the arms are extended to stand upright, the cloth strips unfold in an inverted fan shape. At the same time, its chest and back are wearing bronze mirrors and small bells, to show its powerful magic.
