    Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), is a state in East Asia. It is located in the western Pacific Ocean and shares borders with several neighboring states:

    • To the west: The People's Republic of China (PRC).
    • To the northeast: Japan.
    • To the south: The Philippines.

    Key Geographic Features:

    • Area: Taiwan has an area of 35,808 square kilometers (13,826 square miles), making it slightly smaller than the US state of Maryland.
    • Geography: The island is dominated by mountain ranges that cover the eastern two-thirds of the island, while the western third consists of plains. This western plain is where most of Taiwan's highly urbanized population is concentrated.

    1. Taipei: The capital city and largest metropolitan area, located in the northern part of the island. Taipei is the economic and political center of Taiwan.

    2. Kaohsiung: Located in the southern part of Taiwan, Kaohsiung is the second-largest city and is known for its port, which is one of the busiest in the world.

    3. Taichung: Situated in the central region, Taichung is Taiwan's third-largest city and is known for its cultural attractions and pleasant climate.

    4. Tainan: The oldest city in Taiwan, known for its historical significance, temples, and traditional Taiwanese culture.

    5. Taoyuan: A rapidly growing city in the northern part of Taiwan, known for its international airport and its proximity to Taipei.

    Demographics:

    • Population: Taiwan has a population of approximately 23.5 million people, making it one of the most densely populated places in the world.

    • Taiwan is the most populous state that is not a member of the United Nations (UN).

    Political and International Status:

    • Despite its significant economic power and large population, Taiwan is not recognized as a member of the United Nations (UN) due to ongoing political issues with China. Taiwan's status remains a sensitive and complex issue in international relations.

    Economy:

    • Taiwan has a highly developed economy, which is the largest and most advanced in the region not recognized by the UN.
    • It is known for its technology industry, particularly in semiconductors, electronics, and machinery. The country is a global leader in these sectors, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) being one of the most important companies globally.
