Changkong Plank Trail of Mount Huashan, Weinan

Historical Origin

It is said that Bodhidharma once cultivated here. To seek a quiet place for spiritual cultivation and become an immortal, He Zhinen, the first – generation patriarch of the Huashan Sect in the early Yuan Dynasty, built the road by embedding iron nails and laying wooden planks on the cliffs.

Structure of the Plank Road

The Changkong Plank Road clings to the cliffs, 110 meters long and at an altitude of 2160.5 meters, with sheer cliffs above and below, resembling a suspended ladder. The whole road is divided into three sections. The upper section runs from the Nantianmen Stone Archway (南天门石坊) to the Chaoyuan Cave (朝元洞), carved into the dangerous cliff, about 20 meters long. From the Chaoyuan Cave, it turns straight down into a suspended ladder, which is the middle section. After exiting the suspended ladder and turning west, it reaches the lower section, a wooden plank road supported by stone or iron pillars.
