Why is Geological and Minerals Exhibition Hall So Special?

Xinjiang Museum of Geology and Mineral Resources is a provincial comprehensive geological science museum in China. Located in Youyi Road, Urumqi City, Xinjiang. The predecessor was the geological exhibition room of Xinjiang Geological Bureau. In 1964, it was changed to Xinjiang Geological Exhibition Hall. The exhibition building was rebuilt in 1979 and renamed Xinjiang Geology and Mineral Exhibition Hall in 1982. It was officially opened on October 1, 1984. It was changed to its present name in August 1986.

Located on Youhao road, Urumqi, the exhibition hall was built in 1984. With a ground area of 3700 square meters, it’s one of the biggest geological and minerals exhibition hall in china, only inferior to that in Beijing.

Main Attraction of Geological and Minerals Exhibition Hall

There are two halls on different subjects, one is the exhibition of the mineral deposits in Xinjiang, another is the exhibition of geology and minerals and the collected specimens, models and pictures are nearly 10 thousand pieces. The contents of these exhibitions include three parts, the mineral deposits in Xinjiang and popular geological knowledge, exploitation and using of mineral resources, and geology.
 
The museum has a collection of more than 12,000 specimens of minerals, rocks, ores, animal and plant fossils and more than 100 first-class items. Among them are 1.7 meters long, 62 centimeters in diameter and 780 kilograms in weight, 35 centimeters in diameter, 25 centimeters in thickness, 102 kilograms in weight and 99.84% copper content of round natural copper, Xinjiang’s first crystal transparent diamond weighing 1.2 carats, large beryl and muscovite from Altai pegmatite deposit, world-renowned Hotan jade and various tourmalines and gemstones. In addition, the fossil specimens of the complete amphibian vertebrate Urumchi salamander 230 million years ago and the vertebrate Sullivan 160 million years ago were first discovered in China in the summer of 1983.
 
The museum has four exhibition halls specializing in earth science, Xinjiang mineral resources, development and utilization of Xinjiang mineral resources and geology. The display area is 2400 square meters. On display are 115 of the 121 minerals found in Xinjiang. The museum also holds summer geological camps, science popularization activities and special exhibitions to expand service areas.
