Why is Site of the Stone Constructions So Special?

The site covers an area of nearly 200 square meters. The residual wall is nearly 2 meters high and 3 meters thick. It is sloping near the bottom and is divided into front and rear chambers. The main chamber occupies an area of 100 square meters in the south and has a pillar hole at the bottom. The residual wood pillar section in the hole and the attached chamber in the north are parallel to each other. Doorways are connected with each other. The attached chamber opens to the east. The building materials are selected from giant pebbles scattered in front of the mountain. The inner side wall of the stone house is flat. The site was inhabited three times and was later destroyed by fire. Large copper hoops, small knives with ring heads, red pottery pots with double eardrums and bellies, pottery files, bones of horses, sheep and deer and carbonized wheat grains were unearthed.

 It firstly appeared as a giant heap of stones, about 3m high and 30m in diameter. But after excavation, a stone-constructed building was found. The wall of the building was divided into two rooms connected by a gateway, cooking stove and column holes were found in the rooms. The unearthed relics include copper vessels, copper knives, painted pottery jars, pottery jugs and stone mills, etc. It’s the first time to find a single stone-constructed residency of this size in Xinjiang. It is listed as a cultural site under the autonomous region protection.

More than 100 buildings in 11 groups, more than 200 ancient tombs and more than 1,000 rock paintings were found. Professor Wang said: “There are five prehistoric human ancient sites like this in the northwest region. Lanzhou Wanzi ancient site group is the most intact and rare in Xinjiang ancient site group. It is rare in China. Effective protection and appropriate restoration are expected to declare world cultural heritage.” To this end, our county has taken emergency protection measures, stepped up the protection efforts and actively started to declare the world cultural heritage.

At the same time, there are a large number of rock paintings in Balikun County. The surface of the rock paintings is severely weathered. Judging from the style of the rock paintings, the carving technique is simple and straightforward, with the original rock painting making technology. Many rock paintings can be seen in lanzhou wanzi. the rock paintings are very clear, and the contents of the paintings are mostly hunting, grazing, etc.
