Zhengzhou Festivals and Events

Zhengzhou festivals and activities gives a brief introduction of festivals and activities in Zhengzhou and tells travelers what to do for a Zhengzhou festival tour. The majority of Zhengzhou's population is Han nationality, and among the minority groups, Hui ethnic minority has the largest population. Therefore, the festivals and activities in Zhengzhou are mainly those of the Han nationality. Surely, there are also some local featured festivals and actvities in Zhenghzou. 

Festivals in Zhengzhou

For thousands of years, the folk traditions and customs formed by Zhengzhou people include New Year's visit during the Spring Festival, watching festive lanterns on the 15th day of the first lunar month, ancestor worship in the early April and appreciating the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival and so on. Compared with other parts of China, there is not much difference.

Double Seventh Day The 7th Day of 7th Lunar Month The Chinese Valentine's Day, based on Chinese lunar calendar. 
Spirit Festival(Ghost Festival) The 15th Day of 7th Lunar Month Based on Chinese lunar calendar. 
Mid-Autumn Festival The 15th Day of 8th Lunar Month Based on Chinese lunar calendar. One of China's four major traditional folk festivals. Appreciating the moon and eating moon cake. 
Chongyang Festival The 9th Day of 9th Lunar Month  Based on Chinese lunar calendar. 
Winter Solstice Festival(Dongzhi) December 21st, 22nd or 23rd Based on Chinese lunar calendar. 
Summer Solstice Festival(Dongzhi) June 21st or 22nd Based on Chinese lunar calendar. 
Laba Festival The 8th Day of the 12th Lunar Month(January 2, 2020) Based on Chinese lunar calendar. 
National Day October 1-7 The date on which the People's Republic of China was proclaimed. 

Local Featured Festivals in Zhengzhou

Zhengzhou Monthly Rose Festival(郑州月季花会)

Location: Zhengzhou
Date: During flowering phase, from April to early May
Brief Introduction: Every year at this time, Zhengzhou will hold the Monthly Rose Festival. Not only the host unit will take out various kinds of minthly rose, and citizens will also take out the monthly roses cultivated by themselves. On the occasion, the whole city is full of flowers, especially at parks and on the streets.

Zhengzhou International Shaolin Martial Arts Festival(郑州国际少林武术节)

Location: Dengfeng/Zhengzhou
Date: Held once every two year. October 19-24, 2018.
Brief Introduction: Zhengzhou International Shaolin Martial Arts Festival is a large-scale comprehensive festival integrating martial arts, tourism and cultural exchange. Since 1991, the Zhengzhou International Shaolin Martial Arts Festival has been successfully held for 12 times. Henan people uphold martial arts, Shaolin Temple Kung Fu is known throughout the world. In the spirit of "carry forward the Chinese martial arts, expand the opening to the outside world, promote the economic development", Zhengzhou holds the martial arts festival every two years.

Ancestor Worship Grand Ceremony of Yellow Emperor Hometown(黄帝故里拜祖大典)

Location: Zhengzhou
Date: Every year on the third day of the third lunar month
Brief Introduction: The 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month is the auspicious day for the Yellow Emperor Xuanyuan to unify the whole country and realize great achievements. Up to now, there are still a large number of relics of the yellow emperor celebration activities in Xinzheng territory. In order to express the worship of the yellow emperor Xuanyuan, grand ancestor worship activities were risen since the spring and autumn period. Today, the hometown of the yellow emperor Xuanyuan has become a Chinese holy land for carrying forward Chinese culture, condensing national spirit, attracting Chinese descendants at home and abroad to seek roots and worship ancestors.

Temple Fairs

During Spring Festival, there are many temple fairs in Zhengzhou, large and small. Various cultural activities allow you to experience the Spring Festival atmosphere in Zhengzhou well. 

Zhengzhou City God Temple Fair(郑州城隍庙会)

Location: Zhengzhou
Date: Every year from the 1st day to 16th day of the 1st lunar month
Brief Introduction: Zhengzhou City God Temple Fair is an ancient temple fair of Zhengzhou city, is also one of the good places for Zhengzhou citizens to travel during the Spring Festival. In recent years, Zhengzhou City God Temple has held temple fair activities for many times, focusing on displaying featured Han folk culture and art of central plain area. Opera singing, Yangko team, Pan drum team performance, Suona performance, folk paper-cut art, Yellow River Chengni inkstone, Nanyang pyrograph, bronze ware, coins, purple sands and other a series of exhibitions, as well as experts on-site cultural relic identification and other activities are numerous.

Zhongyuan Fu Tower Spring Festival Temple Fair(中原福塔新春庙会)

Location: Zhongyuan Tower in Zhengzhou
Date: During Spring Festival
Brief Introduction: During the temple fair, folk custom performances like dragon dance and lion dance are performed on the square to pray for peace and good luck in the coming year. The culture of intangible cultural heritage, such as dough figurine, paper-cut and sugar painting, is integrated into the temple fair, which can better reflect the traditional atmosphere of the New Year. In addition, you can taste delicious food, watch festive lanterns, listen to traditional opera and participate in various traditional activities. 

Zhengzhou Confucian Temple Temple Fair(郑州文庙庙会)

Location: Zhengzhou
Date: From the 1st day to the 6th day of the 1st lunar month
Brief Introduction: In addition to the dragon dance and lion dance, stilts, acrobatics and other folk handicrafts, Zhengzhou Confucian Temple Temple Fair held Confucius-commemorating rituals every day, which is also worthy of tourists and citizens to watch and participate in the traditional cultural activities.
