Mount Lushan Education

There is Bailudong Academy (白鹿洞书院) in Mount Lushan. It is also known as Bailudong Shutang (白鹿洞书堂). Bailudong Academy was one of the most famous and greatest educational institutions in ancient China. It was founded by the brothers, Li Bo (李勃) and Li She (李涉). The original purpose of it was to provide scholars and students with books. In the Song dynasty, it was Zhu Xi, a famous master of “School of Li” (理学) that made Bailudong Academy famous all over the country in that time. At first, he became the director of the academy and collected books from all over the world. And then he taught students in the academy. In Zhu Xi's academy the method of learning and teaching was different from that of today. The students studied the texts by themselves and then consulted their professors. And they had discussion with classmates in lecturing sessions (讲会), prose sessions (文会) and poetry sessions (诗会). Bailudong Academy was not only the place where Zhu Xi taught Neo-Confucian theories, but it became the most significant educational institutions of China during the Southern Song period (1127-1279). Until now, Bailudong Academy is also one of the most famous academies in China.
More significantly, the modern education of Lushan is also great. There are more than 20 middle schools, 100 primary schools and 90 kindergartens in Lushan.
