Mount Lushan Culture

Due to its long history, Mount Lushan enjoys profound cultures. Widely known for its picturesque scenery, Mount Lushan has been visited by many poets and literary scholars who have traveled there to gain inspiration. Besides, there are grandiose temples, many stone inscriptions and stone tablets playing an important role in the development of both Buddhism and Taoism. What’s more, there are more than 600 villas in Mount Lushan built by celebrities.

Celebrities

Mount Lushan, as one of the most famous mountains of China, had attracted a lot of celebrities. There were more than 1, 500 poets or writers visiting Mount Lushan, such as Tao Yuanming, Li Bai, Bai Juyi, Wang Anshi, Huang Tingjian, etc. And most of them wrote poems and essays to show their affection to Mount Lushan. Besides, there is Bailudong Academy (白鹿洞书院) which was founded in AD 940.

Religion

The uniqueness of Mount Lushan religious culture is that there are six kinds of religions in Mount Lushan, which cannot be found all over the world. In the fourth century, Hui Yuan, an eminent monk, built Donglin Temple in Mount Lushan. Then, Lu Xiujing, a Taoist Zen master, built Jianji Taoist Temple (简寂观) here, and he compiled 1, 200 volumes of Taoist scripture. In 1886, Christianity was introduced into Mount Lushan. Then, Catholicism began to spread in Mount Lushan in 1914, and in 1925, Muslims built a holy place for religious activities in Mount Lushan. Nowadays, Mount Lushan still preserves some temples, Taoist temples, Christ churches and mosques.

Architecture

The villas of Mount Lushan are the most famous in the world. There are 636 villas in Mount Lushan, with a total construction area of 174, 653 square meters. The architectural styles of these villas are various. Mount Lushan boasts 259 villas in American style, 125 villas in British style, 17 villas in German style, 12 villas in Swedish style, 11 villas in Japanese style, 7 villas in French style, 3 villas in Finnish style and 3 villas in Norwegian style. There are also Danish, Canadian, Russian, Portuguese, Australian, Swiss and international (mixed architectural styles) villas. Among them, more than 300 villas were designed and built celebrities. Therefore, Mount Lushan can be called the "World Villa Architectural Art Museum".

Movie

There is a movie about Mount Lushan. It is Romance on Mount Lushan which is directed by Huang Zumo in1980. It is the first love-oriented film on the base of Mount Lushan in China after the Cultural Revolution. Due to this movie, Lushan Love Cinema was built in 1980. Since the 1980s, Romance on Mount Lushan has been shown 365 days every year for 35 years in Lushan Love Cinema, which had been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.
