Beijing Transportation – By Air

In addition to Beijing Capital International Airport, there are six other airports in Beijing, including Beijing Nanyuan Airport, Beijing Liangxiang Airport, Beijing Xijiao Airport, Beijing Shahe Airport and Beijing Badaling airport, and Beijing Daxing International Airport. Among them, Nanyuan airport (the base airport of China united airlines) and Beijing Daxing international airport(opened to traffic on September 30, 2019) are civil and military airports, others are military airports. At present, there are two airports in Beijing serving passengers, Capital International Airport and Nanyuan Airport.

Beijing Capital International Airport

Beijing Capital International Airport, one of the largest airports in the world, is the main center of Air China. It is located in Chaoyang district, 25 kilometers away from the urban area of Beijing. With the most air routes in China, it is very convenient to arrive or depart. Almost all domestic and international flights in Beijing stop and take off at Beijing capital international airport. Currently, Beijing capital international airport has three terminals with a total area of 1.41 million square meters.

On March 2, 1958, the airport was officially put into use. By the end of 2016, Beijing capital international airport had 6 base airlines, including Air ChinaChina Eastern AirlinesChina Southern AirlinesHainan AirlinesCapital Airlines and SF Airlines. Xiamen airlines has set up a branch in Chaoyang district of Beijing. Airport Transportation

Expressways

  • The airport expressway, which runs directly from Sanyuanqiao on Beijing’s third ring road to Beijing capital international airport, was built and put into use in the early 1990s. The airport expressway is basically parallel to the general highway built in the 1950s, which is now regarded as the airport side road. The northeast City Corner liaison line connects the airport expressway with the Dongzhimen area of Beijing’s second ring road.
  • Airport north expressway starts from Jingcheng expressway to Lutuan bridge, Beijing capital international airport freight north road; The airport south expressway connects to Jingcheng expressway, airport expressway, airport second expressway, Beijing 6th ring road and terminal 3.
  • Airport second expressway is directly from the pingfang bridge of east 5th ring road to Beijing capital international airport terminal 3.

Subway

The city has also a Beijing subway airport line completed and opened in 2008, which takes about 15 minutes to reach terminal 2 at Beijing capital international airport from Dongzhimen in the downtown. The airport metro has four stations: Dongzhimen station (you can transfer to Beijing subway line 2, Beijing subway line 13 here), Sanyuanqiao station (you can transfer to Beijing subway line 10 here), capital international airport terminal 2 station and capital international airport terminal 3 station.

Price

The starting fare for a Beijing taxi is 13 yuan within 3 kilometers and then 2.3 yuan per kilometer for over 3 kilometers.

  • Fuel surcharge of 1 yuan per time; 
  • Low speed driving and waiting fee are charged when the speed is less than 12km/h. It will be charged the fare of 2 km every 5 minutes during morning and evening rush hours (excluding the empty driving fee), and the fare of 1 km during other periods (excluding the empty driving fee);
  • Taxi Booking Service: 6 yuan will be charged each time more than 4 hours in advance, and 5 yuan will be charged each time less than 4 hours in advance ;
  • For passengers taking more than 15 kilometers one way, 50% additional charge per kilometer;
  • Round-trip passengers (that is, the starting point and the end point are within 2 km (including 2 km)), no extra charge for empty driving; 
  • When operating from 23:00(inclusive) to 05:00 of the next day(exclusive), 20% additional fee will be charged for each kilometer.

Airport Bus

Airport buses in Beijing include urban airport bus, inter-provincial bus and airport express lines. The airport bus to urban area has 19 day lines and 2 night line(Xidan night line and Gongzhufen night line), which costs 20-30 yuan, and takes half to one hour. Passengers can take inter-provincial buses at Gate 1 of ground floor, terminal 3 and Gate 15 of ground floor, terminal 2. And inter-provincial buses can take you to TianjinQinhuangdao, Langfang, Baoding, Tangshan, Cangzhou from capital international airport. The Airport express lines run mostly from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, and are the cheapest, ranging from 2-11 yuan. 

Beijing Nanyuan Airport

Beijing Nanyuan Airport, founded in 1910, located in Fengtai district of Beijing, is the first airport in Chinese history. The airport is now a joint military and civilian airport. It opens only to united airlines of China and China Eastern airlines, at the same time, it is the main operating base of united airlines of China. Beijing Nanyuan Airport is 3 kilometers away from downtown(south 4th ring road) and 13 kilometers away from Tian’anmen square. Nanyuan airport has a terminal that handles 1.2 million passengers a year, and the airfield class is 4D.

On January 3, 2019, according to a press conference of the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission, Daxing International Airport will be officially opened on September 30, 2019. At that time, Nanyuan Airport will be closed at the same time, and civil aviation functions will transfer to the new airport.

Beijing Daxing International Airport

Beijing Daxing international airport is a super-large international aviation comprehensive transport hub built between Daxing district of Beijing city and Guangyang district of Langfang City in Hebei Province. Seven runways and about 1.4 million square meters of terminal buildings are being built according to the 2040 passenger flow capacity of 100 million passengers and aircraft take-off and landing capacity of 800,000 flights. The airport will reserve control land according to the 2050 passenger throughput of 130 million passengers, aircraft take-off and landing capacity of 1.03 million flights and the scale of nine runways.

The main project area of the airport is mostly in Beijing, and Daxing International Airport is the third passenger airport after Beijing capital international airport and Beijing Nanyuan airport (to be relocated). This stage has 4 runways and a dual-use runway(that is Air force Nanyuan New Airport), 70 square meters of terminal, 92 parking aprons, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019. When the passenger flow reaches 45 million person-times, the First Satellite Hall will be built, which will make the airport terminal area reach 820,000 square meters and 137 parking aprons, so that it can meet the design capacity of 72 million person-times.

On July 6, 2018, it was made clear that Beijing Daxing international airport and its supporting projects would be completed and accepted on June 30, 2019, and put into operation on September 30, 2019.

Expressway

The new airport expressway starts from Gongyi east bridge on the south 4th ring road in the north, and ends at the land boundary on the north side of the new airport, with a total length of 35 kilometers. There are Daguang expressway in the west side of the new airport, Jingtai expressway in the east side, the new airport north line expressway in the north side, and Langzhuo expressway and Beijing new airport expressway in the south side, connecting the airport and downtown area directly. 

Subway

Beijing new airport subway line, also known as Beijing’s second airport line, is 41 kilometers long and consists of Lize business district, Caoqiao, Guanyinsi station, Daxing airport station and south terminal station. Construction began at the end of 2016 and the line will be put into use simultaneously with Beijing daxing international airport in 2019. Beijing subway line 20 (line R4) is a planned express line connecting the two airports, with terminal 3 station of Beijing capital airport and north terminal station of Daxing airport at both ends. This subway line will connect Beijing’s two airports of north and south in the future.

Railway

Jingxiong intercity railway is a new-built intercity railway from Beijing to Xiongan new area. The railway starts from Liying station of Jingjiu railway and ends at Xiongan new area through Beijing Daxing district, Beijing new airport and Bazhou city.
