    Budget & Value

Located in the mountainous southwest corner of Hubei Province (湖北省), Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (恩施土家族苗族自治州) is one of China’s most spectacular destinations for nature, ethnic culture, and outdoor adventure. Surrounded by Hunan Province (湖南省) to the south and Chongqing Municipality (重庆市) to the west and northwest, Enshi lies in the transition zone between the Jianghan Plain and the Sichuan Basin. With dramatic karst landscapes, deep valleys, ancient forests, and traditional Tujia and Miao cultures, Enshi is often called the “Shangri-La of Hubei.”

    Why Visit Enshi?

Enshi Grand Canyon (恩施大峡谷) – China’s Grand Canyon Landscape

The Enshi Grand Canyon (恩施大峡谷) is the most famous natural attraction in the prefecture and one of the most impressive canyon landscapes in China. Towering cliffs, vertical peaks, stone forests, caves, rivers, and winding mountain trails create a landscape often compared with the world’s great canyon destinations. The scenic area’s highlights include the Qixingzhai Scenic Area (七星寨景区) with spectacular cliff views and the Yunlong Ground Fissure (云龙地缝) featuring waterfalls and deep geological formations. It is an ideal destination for hiking, photography, and landscape exploration.

Tenglong Cave (腾龙洞) – Underground Karst Wonder

Located near Lichuan City (利川市), Tenglong Cave (腾龙洞) is one of China’s largest karst caves and a major geological attraction in western Hubei. The enormous underground cave system contains giant halls, underground rivers, waterfalls, and unique rock formations. Visitors can explore the spectacular natural environment while enjoying cultural performances inside the cave, creating a combination of geology, adventure, and local culture.

Pingshan Canyon (屏山峡谷) – “Semitransparent Water Wonderland”

Pingshan Canyon (屏山峡谷) is famous for its crystal-clear river water, steep cliffs, and picturesque mountain scenery. The calm water surface creates a floating boat effect, making visitors appear to drift above the river. Surrounded by green mountains and traditional villages, the canyon has become one of Enshi’s most popular photography destinations.

Tujia and Miao Ethnic Culture (土家族苗族文化)

Enshi is one of China’s important ethnic cultural regions, home mainly to the Tujia (土家族) and Miao (苗族) peoples. Traditional customs remain an important part of local life, including folk songs, dances, handicrafts, festivals, and distinctive architecture. Visitors can experience Tujia hand-waving dance, Miao embroidery, traditional clothing, and local village lifestyles.

Tujia Traditional Villages & Folk Experiences

The mountain villages of Enshi preserve unique cultural landscapes with wooden houses, terraced fields, and traditional farming practices. Places such as Nv’er City (女儿城) provide opportunities to experience Tujia cuisine, folk performances, and cultural activities. Local specialties such as smoked meat, Tujia-style dishes, and tea culture add to the regional travel experience.

    Karst Landscapes & Natural Wonders

Enshi is located within one of China’s important karst regions, creating a landscape of caves, sinkholes, cliffs, underground rivers, and stone formations. The Luoquanyan Sinkhole (锣圈岩天坑) in Xuan’en County (宣恩县) is known for its unique ecosystem and impressive geological features. The combination of mountains, forests, caves, and rivers makes Enshi a paradise for geology lovers and outdoor travelers.

Qingjiang River (清江) – Landscape and River Tourism

The Qingjiang River (清江) flows through Enshi and is known as one of the most beautiful rivers in western Hubei. Boat trips along the river reveal green mountains, dramatic cliffs, traditional villages, and peaceful countryside scenery. The river landscape provides excellent opportunities for sightseeing, photography, and relaxation.

    Outdoor Adventures & Eco-Tourism

With mountains covering much of the region, Enshi offers rich outdoor experiences including canyon hiking, cave exploration, forest trekking, river cruises, photography tours, and ecological travel. The region’s fresh mountain climate also makes it a popular summer retreat destination, especially for travelers seeking cooler weather and natural landscapes.

    Enshi Cuisine & Local Flavors

Enshi cuisine combines Tujia traditions with flavors from western Hubei. Popular local foods include Tujia smoked pork (土家腊肉), Hezha (合渣), mountain vegetables, Enshi tea, and spicy regional dishes. The area is also famous for Enshi Yulu Tea (恩施玉露), one of China’s traditional steamed green teas with a history of more than a thousand years.
