Located in eastern Henan Province (河南省), Shangqiu (商丘) is one of the important historic cities of the Central Plains (中原) and a major center for exploring the origins of Shang civilization, ancient commerce, traditional academies, Han Dynasty heritage, and old-city architecture. Positioned near the borders of Shandong (山东) and Anhui (安徽), Shangqiu combines thousands of years of history with convenient railway connections, making it an appealing cultural stop in eastern Henan.
Why Visit Shangqiu?
Shangqiu Ancient City: Shangqiu Ancient City (商丘古城), historically known as Guidefu (归德府), is the cultural heart of the city. Its old walls, gates, moat, traditional streets, temples, former residences, and historic courtyards preserve the atmosphere of a traditional northern Chinese city. Important sites within and around the ancient city include Guidefu City Wall (归德府城墙), Zhang Xun Temple (张巡祠), Confucian Temple (文庙), and the former residence of Hou Fangyu.
Yingtian Academy: Yingtian Academy (应天书院) is one of the most celebrated historic academies in China and is traditionally listed alongside Yuelu Academy, Bailudong Academy, and Songyang Academy among the country’s Four Great Academies. Closely associated with the intellectual traditions of the Northern Song Dynasty, it represents Shangqiu’s long history of Confucian education and scholarship.
Mangdang Mountain: Mangdang Mountain Tourism Area (芒砀山旅游区, 5A) in Yongcheng (永城) is one of Shangqiu’s most important historical destinations. The area is especially famous for the Han and Liang Royal Tombs (汉梁王陵), Han Dynasty archaeological remains, the Four Deities Cloud-and-Qi Mural (四神云气图), and cultural sites associated with Liu Bang (刘邦), founder of the Han Dynasty.
Shangzu Temple & Fire God Platform: Shangzu Temple (商祖祠) and Fire God Platform (火神台) reflect Shangqiu’s strong association with the origins of commerce and ancient fire culture. Local cultural traditions connect the region with early Shang ancestors, Wang Hai (王亥) and the development of trade, as well as legends surrounding Suiren (燧人氏) and the discovery of fire-making.
Shangqiu Museum: Shangqiu Museum (商丘博物馆) provides a useful introduction to the region’s archaeology and long cultural history, with exhibitions highlighting prehistoric settlements, Shang civilization, ancient states, historic commerce, and later dynastic development. It is an excellent starting point for understanding why Shangqiu is promoted as an important source area of Shang culture.
Zhang Xun Temple: Zhang Xun Temple (张巡祠) commemorates Zhang Xun (张巡) and the defense of Suiyang during the Tang Dynasty. Located within the wider ancient-city heritage area, it adds an important military and loyalist tradition to Shangqiu’s rich historical landscape.
Culture & Experiences
Shang Civilization: Shangqiu’s strongest cultural identity is connected with the origins and development of Shang culture (殷商文化). Archaeological sites, ancestral traditions, museums, temples, and cultural festivals explore the region’s links with early Shang communities, ancient commerce, and the development of Central Plains civilization.
Han Dynasty Heritage: The royal tombs and archaeological remains around Mangdang Mountain make Yongcheng one of the most important destinations in eastern Henan for experiencing Han Dynasty history, funerary art, and legends connected with the rise of the Han Empire.
Ancient City & Scholar Culture: A visit to Shangqiu Ancient City can combine old walls and streets with Yingtian Academy, temples, former residences, traditional architecture, and evening cultural activities. This concentration of merchant history, Confucian scholarship, and ancient-city heritage gives Shangqiu a distinctive character among the historic cities of Henan.
