Located in southwestern Henan Province (河南省), Nanyang (南阳) is one of the province’s richest destinations for history, mountains, ancient architecture, traditional medicine, and geological exploration. With more than 2,800 years of urban history, Nanyang is closely associated with famous figures such as Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮), Zhang Zhongjing (张仲景), and Zhang Heng (张衡). Beyond the historic city, the Funiu Mountains (伏牛山), dinosaur fossil sites, ancient government offices, merchant towns, and the Danjiangkou Reservoir (丹江口水库) create a diverse travel experience combining culture and nature.
Why Visit Nanyang?
Wolonggang Wuhou Shrine: Wolonggang Wuhou Shrine (卧龙岗武侯祠) is Nanyang’s most famous historic attraction and is closely associated with Zhuge Liang, the celebrated strategist of the Three Kingdoms period. Traditional halls, memorial buildings, ancient trees, stone inscriptions, and the surrounding Wolonggang cultural landscape bring the stories of Zhuge Liang and the “Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage” to life.
Nanyang Han Painting Museum: Nanyang Han Painting Museum (南阳汉画馆) preserves one of China’s most important collections of Han Dynasty pictorial stone carvings. The works depict mythology, astronomy, hunting, music, dance, daily life, and ancient beliefs, providing an exceptional visual record of society during the Han Dynasty. Nanyang’s official city overview describes the museum as having the country’s largest surviving collection of Han pictorial stone carvings.
Medical Sage Shrine: Medical Sage Shrine (医圣祠) commemorates Zhang Zhongjing (张仲景), one of the most influential physicians in traditional Chinese medicine. The shrine and surrounding cultural area introduce his medical achievements, classical Chinese medicine, herbal traditions, and Nanyang’s continuing identity as an important center of traditional medicine culture.
Nanyang Government Office: Nanyang Government Office (南阳府衙) preserves an exceptionally complete historic prefectural-level government complex. Traditional halls, courtyards, administrative offices, and exhibitions provide insight into local government, law, and official life in imperial China, making it one of the city center’s most distinctive architectural attractions.
Laojieling Scenic Area: Laojieling Scenic Area (老界岭) in Xixia County (西峡县) lies deep in the Funiu Mountains and features extensive forests, mountain ridges, cloud seas, hiking trails, and cool summer temperatures. It is part of the national 5A-rated Xixia Funiu Mountain Laojieling–Dinosaur Relics tourism area and is especially popular for hiking, forest wellness, summer retreats, and autumn scenery.
Xixia Dinosaur Relics Park: Xixia Dinosaur Relics Park (西峡恐龙遗迹园) showcases the extraordinary dinosaur fossil heritage discovered in the Nanyang Basin. Dinosaur eggs, fossil displays, reconstructed skeletons, geological exhibitions, and family-oriented science experiences make it one of Henan’s most distinctive attractions for families and educational travel. Together with Laojieling, it forms part of Nanyang’s national 5A tourism area.
Neixiang County Government Office: Neixiang County Government Office (内乡县衙) in Neixiang County (内乡县) is one of China’s best-preserved historic county-level government complexes. Its gates, courtrooms, offices, residences, courtyards, and administrative displays offer an unusually complete picture of how local government operated during imperial times.
Shedian Ancient Town: Shedian Ancient Town (赊店古镇) in Sheqi County (社旗县) preserves the commercial heritage of an important historic trading town. Its best-known monument, Shan-Shaan Guild Hall (山陕会馆), is celebrated for elaborate wood, stone, and brick carvings, while traditional streets and merchant architecture reflect the prosperity of historic trade routes through the Central Plains.
Danjiangkou Reservoir & South-to-North Water Diversion: Xichuan County (淅川县) lies beside the vast Danjiangkou Reservoir, the water source area for the middle route of China’s South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Lake landscapes, mountains, ecological areas, and historic temples such as Xiangyan Temple (香严寺) give western Nanyang a quieter combination of water scenery, ecology, and cultural heritage.
