Changchun Overview

As the capital of Jilin Province, Changchun is one of the four central cities in Northeast China, and also an important industrial city in China. As a historical city of China, it was once the capital of the Manchukuo, owning many historical monuments, industrial heritages and cultural relics. It witnessed the whole political and military conflicts in modern Northeast Asia.

Basic Information

Geography

Changchun is situated in the Songliao Plain in the hinterland of the Northeast Plain of China, adjacent to Songyuan City in the northwest, Siping City in the southwest, Jilin City in the southeast, and Harbin City in Heilongjiang Province in the Northeast.

Located in the center of the Songliao Plain, Changchun is the transition zone between the eastern mountainous area and the western Songliao Plain. Its southeast part is a hilly-low mountainous area with the elevation of 200-400m. The northwest part is the alluvial platform, which belongs to the undulating terrain of the high plain, with an elevation of 160-200m.

Climate

Changchun is located in the transition zone between eastern mountainous humid area and semi-arid area of western plain, so its climate belongs to humid continental climate. Although the eastern and southern parts of Changchun are not far from the ocean, Changbai Mountain weakened the effect caused by summer monsoon, and because of the flat Songliao Plain in the western and northern parts, the Siberian polar continental air mass could flow freely, Changchun is dry and windy in spring, tepid and rainy in summer, sunny with large temperature difference between day and night in autumn, and cold and arid in winter. The temperature of Changchun is usually from 23.1℃ to -15.1℃.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Changchun is from December to January of the next year. At that time, you could enjoy the snowy magnificent scene of the north China.

Administrative Division

By 2017, with the total governance area of 20,565 square kilometers, Changchun has the jurisdiction over 7 distracts, 2 county-level cities, and 1 county. Respectively, they are Nanguan District, Kuancheng District, Chaoyang District, Erdao District, Luyuan District, Shuangyang District, Jiutai District, Nong’an County, Yushu City and Dehui City.

Ethnic Culture

Changchun is a city with a long history and vitality. It has formed multiple cultures and customs that are popular among people around China, including Er Ren Zhuan, Jilin Opera, Huanglong Opera, and Northeast Drum. And there are Changchun food with unique local flavors such as Fried Pork in Scoop, Ginseng steamed chicken, and Changbai Banquet with Rare Products.

Transportation

As the capital city of Jilin Province, Changchun is equipped with airplanes, trains and long-distance buses, which are very convenient for travelling. So you can come to Changchun by air, by train or by car. Changchun owns Longjia International Airport, and railway stations such as Changchun Railway Station, Changchunxi Railway Station, Longjia Railway Station, Dehui Railway Station and Jiutai Railway Station. And you can take tram, light rail, bus, or taxi to get around Changchun.

Things to Do

Museum of Imperial Palace of Manchu State

Museum of Imperial Palace of Manchu State was the palace of the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty, Aisin Gioro Puyi, who served as the emperor of the Manchurian state at that time. Puyi used to live here for thirteen years, from 1932 to 1945. Nowadays, the living and working environment of Puyi in this place is restored, and a large amount of historical materials and cultural relics are displayed to let people have a better understanding of the crimes of Japanese invaders and the live of the last emperor of China.

Changchun World Sculpture Park

Located in the southern part of Changchun City, Changchun World Sculpture Park is the world's largest sculpture park built in the center of the city. There displays nearly 500 pieces of sculpture arts, which are a real collection of sculpture arts all over the world. In this park you can enjoy beautiful environment, and see various sculptures.

Jingyuetan National Forest Park

Jingyuetan National Forest Park is a 5A national tourist attraction. It owns beautiful landscapes and in each season sceneries are different. In the park lies the world’s largest artificial forest. Jingyuetan has become an ideal place for hiking in spring, avoiding summer heat in summer, enjoying autumnal scenery in autumn and playing with snow in winter.

Biological Resources

Changchun owns a forest land of about 265,000 hectares which is mainly composed of Black pine, Pinus sylvestris, spruce, fir, long white larch, arborvitae, cypress, walnut, ash, yellow pineapple, ash, aspen, black birch, and etc. Among the wild plant resources, more than 300 of them are full of economical value such as Schisandra, Codonopsis, and Hawthorn. In terms of wildlife resources, there are 34 species of 5 categories, including leopard cat, red fox, swan, forest frog, Chinese sturgeon, scorpion scorpion, and etc.

Land Resources

Changchun owns a vast territory with abundant land resources. The main Soil textures are black soil, meadow soil, and black earth soil, respectively accounting for 34.5%, 29.06% and 15.28% of the cultivated area. There are 190 types of soils in Changchun with its distribution presenting the obvious feature of transitivity.

Mineral Resources

There are 39 identified mineral resources in Changchun, including energy mines, non-metallic mines and metal mines, which are mostly distributed in Jiutai District and Shuangyang District. Except identified resources such as coal, oil rock, cement limestone, cement clay, perlite sand, bentonite, fluorite, sand for casting, copper, silver, and iron, resources such as oil and natural gas are reserved in Changchun.
