And it’s a must-go place when you go to Chengdu. Home to nearly 120 giant and 76 red pandas, the base focuses on getting these notoriously love shy creatures to breed and has been remarkably successful at it. One of the biggest attractions is the panda breeding center where you can watch the baby pandas through glass in their playpens.

1. From Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Take Metro Line 10 at Shuangliu Airport Terminal 1, get off at Taipingyuan Station, transfer to Metro Line 3, get off at Panda Avenue Station, get out of the Metro (at Exit A), take Bus D025/198 /198A, and get off at Panda Base Bus Station. The journey is about 32 km and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

2. From Chengdu North Railway Station to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Take Metro Line 7 at Chengdu North Railway Station, get off at Simaqiao Station, transfer to Metro Line 3, get off at Panda Avenue Station, get out of the Metro (at Exit A), take Bus D025/198 /198A, and get off at Panda Base Bus Station. The journey is about 10.5km and takes about 48 minutes.

3. From Chengdu East Railway Station to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Take Metro Line 7 at Chengdu East Railway Station, get off at Simaqiao Station, transfer to the Metro Line 3, get off at Panda Avenue Station, get out of the Metro (at Exit A), take Bus D025/198 /198A, and get off at Panda Base Bus Station. The journey is about 20 km and takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

4. From Chengdu Urban Area to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Take a bus to Chengdu Zoo Bus Station in Chengdu Urban Area, transfer to Bus 198 / 198A, and get off at Panda Base Bus Station. It takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

By Metro:

Currently, Metro Line 1, Line 2, Line 3, Line 4, Line 7 and Line 10 of Chengdu Metro are all available and adopting the distance and time based pricing system. The starting price of RMB 2 is for the first 4km, and extra RMB 1 is charged for each incremental 4 km in the range of 4 to 12 km; extra RMB 1 is charged for each incremental 6km in the range of 12 to 24km; extra RMB 1 is charged for each incremental 8km in the range of 24 to 40km; extra RMB 1 is charged for each incremental 10km in the range of 40 to 50km; extra RMB 1 is charged for each incremental 20km after exceeding 50km. Main Attractions in Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Adult Giant Panda Enclosure

The place is where adult pandas live. Here you can see adult pandas’ daily life, such as playing, eating, sleeping and so on. Adult Giant Panda Enclosure is a closed leisure place for pandas in the base. There are open-air gardens and indoor lounges. When the weather is cool, the giant panda will play in the garden.

Sunshine Nursery House

Located in the core area of Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, it is the place where the giant pandas ready to give birth, and the newborn and young pandas live. It is known as the kindergarten of giant panda and one of the most popular places in the whole base. Photo taking is generally not allowed in the area, for it might be harmful to the eyes of baby panda.

Giant Panda Museum

The Giant Panda Museum at the base is the world’s only museum that focuses entirely on the giant panda. You can learn a lot about this at-risk animal in the museum. The Giant Panda Museum has three main halls to visit. There is the Giant Panda Hall, the Vertebrate Hall, and the Butterfly Hall. Lots of displays can be found in the museum such as various information about the wild animals, models, fossils, pictures, and samples.

Best Time to Visit Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

The panda base opens from 7:30am to 6:00pm. The best time to visit is in the morning, especially during feeding time between 8:30 and 10:00. Pandas spend most of their afternoons sleeping, particularly during the height of midsummer.

Pandas usually give birth in August. Thus visitors can see new-born pandas or panda babies in August and September.
