History and Cultural Background

Historical Significance

Baimian Yao Village was established during the Qing Dynasty (清代). Over the centuries, it has preserved important relics that tell the story of its past, including the Qing Dynasty Village Regulations Stone Plaque and Hong Yao Pillars. The village also bears traces of the Red Army (红军) from the Long March. In 1934, the Red Army’s 3rd Division etched slogans on Long She Rock (龙舌岩), now known as Hongjun Rock (红军岩). This rock, which is located near the village, was later designated as a county-level cultural heritage site in 1987.

In 1993, the village was developed as a folk tourism village to promote the traditional culture of the Hong Yao people. However, due to market competition, it temporarily withdrew from tourism in 2003. Since 2013, Baimian Yao Village has been revitalized through the implementation of targeted poverty alleviation policies. This has attracted businesses that help develop the village’s terraced flower fields and homestays, offering a modern twist on traditional rural life.

Cultural Traditions

Baimian Yao Village is known for its vibrant cultural traditions. The villagers are skilled in singing mountain songs and have a deep-rooted tradition of hospitality. Visitors are greeted by Hong Yao women dressed in colorful traditional clothing, who sing sweet mountain songs and perform local dances. Visitors can also enjoy the traditional Yao oil tea (瑶族油茶), a local delicacy, and participate in ethnic sports competitions like the Push Bamboo Pole game and the Elephant Tug-of-War.
