Tianyi Pavilion

Tianyi Pavilion (Tian Yi Ge) is the oldest private library in existence in China. Tianyi Pavilion was built in 1561 in the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644). Occupying an area of 26,000 square meters (about 6.4 acres), it lies beside the picturesque Ming Lake in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province. The library has amassed a collection of 300,000 volumes, 80,000 of which are rare books.

Founded by Ming official Fan Qin, the library owns a great collection of books which went back to 11th century, woodblock and handwritten copies of the Confucian classics, rare local histories and lists of the candidates who were successful in imperial examinations. Having a liking for books, Fan Qin collected local annals, records about jinshi (successful candidate in the highest imperial examination held in the palace under the emperor’s supervision) of various dynasties and contemporary anthologies.

Tianyi Pavilion Library is located downtown beside the beautiful Yuehu Lake. It is combination of culture, social studies, history and art. The overall layout is Tianyi Pavilion, Eastern Garden, The Chens’ Ancestral Hall, The Qings’ Branch Ancestral Hall, Calligraphy and Painting Hall and Local Chronicles Hall. Also to be found in the complex is a statue of founder Fan Qin, Zunjing Hall, the Qin Family Drama Stage, and much more.

Climate of  Tianyi Pavilion

As July and August are quite hot and December through February are somewhat chilly, it is generally best to visit Ningbo in the spring or fall. One should also note that June, August, and September are months of heavy rain.

Activities

There is a springtime (March 22nd) Fenghua Peach Flower Festival to attend and an autumn Ningbo International Fashion Fair (October 23rd to 26th) that some will want to plan on attending.
