Through Trains in Hong Kong

Before the operation of the Hong Kong High Speed Rails, the intercity through trains in Hong Kong is another choice for passenger to visit Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, besides the flights. You should go to the Hung Hom Railway Station for through trains. 

Hong Kong Intercity Services – Through Trains (Z Trains)

The MTR runs regular through-train intercity services between Hong Kong and Guangdong province, Beijing and Shanghai. The through-train terminus is MTR Hung Hom Station located on the Kowloon harbourfront. With the exception of the XRL, passengers have to go through immigration and customs before boarding. There are currently four through train routes:

  • Between Hong Kong and Beijing (Beijing-Kowloon Through Train)
  • Between Hong Kong and Shanghai (Shanghai-Kowloon Through Train)
  • Between Hong Kong and Guangzhou (Guangzhou-Kowloon Through Train)
  • Between Hong Kong and Guangzhou (Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link) (XRL)

Beijing – HK Kowloon Through Trains

The Beijing–Kowloon through train is an intercity railway service between Hung Hom Stationin Hong Kong and the Beijing West railway station, jointly operated by the MTR of Hong Kong and China Railway. The train runs to Beijing and Hong Kong every other day. The whole journey, 2,475km (1,538 miles) long, takes about 24 hours, much longer than the high speed trains whose travel time is 9 hours.

Shanghai – HK Kowloon Through Trains

The Shanghai–Kowloon through train runs between Hung Hom station in Hong Kong and the Shanghai railway station, every other day. The entire journey of 1,991km (1,237 mi) takes about 19.5 hours. The stops on the route are Guangzhou East, Zhuzhou, and Jinhuaxi stations. Only passengers taking Z99A/Z100A (Shanghai-Guangzhou East) can disembark at these stops.

Guangzhou–HK Kowloon Through Train

Hong Kong – Guangzhou Through trains (Z trains) serve travelers between Hong Kong and Guangzhou only (stop at Dongguan city). Train journey from Hong Kong (Hum Hom) to Guangzhou (Guangzhou East) takes around 2 hours and takes you to the city center of both cities and that make it a preferred option especially for canton fair attendants.

Dongguan – HK Kowloon Through Train

Dongguan city is a stop of the Hong Kong – Guangzhou Through trains, with the travel time of 70 minutes. There are 10 daily trains available from Hong Kong to Dongguan Changping. You can take the Hong Kong – Guangzhou Through trains, and get off at Dongguan Changping Station.
