Historical Background

In the spring of 1997, the idea to build the museum was first proposed by Ren Yanshen, then-director of the university’s administrative committee. Taniuchi Keitaro (谷口清太郎), an alumnus of Peking University and advisor to Japan’s Nagoya Railway Corporation (名古屋铁道株式会社), strongly supported the initiative. A fundraising committee was established in Japan, and despite the country’s economic downturn, the project exceeded expectations by raising 277.5 million yen in just one year. This amount was far above the initial target.

In May 1998, Peking University laid the foundation stone for the museum as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations. The museum was completed in 2001 after three years of construction. Jiang Zemin, the then-President of China, personally wrote the name of the museum.
