Houqiao Border Port (猴桥口岸), located in Houqiao Town (猴桥镇), Tengchong City (腾冲市), Baoshan (保山市), Yunnan Province (云南省), is a first-class national open port. It lies on the China-Myanmar border, approximately 70 kilometers from the city center of Tengchong (腾冲). This port connects to Myanmar's Gambaidi Port (甘拜地口岸) and is a strategic gateway along the China-India Road (史迪威公路, Stilwell Road). It serves as a vital commercial hub between China and South Asia and Southeast Asia, as well as a key site along the Southwest Silk Road (西南丝绸之路).

    Key Details:

    • Location: Houqiao Town (猴桥镇), Tengchong City (腾冲市), Baoshan (保山市), Yunnan Province (云南省)

    • Type: National first-class port

    • Country: China

    • Connection: Links to Myanmar's Gambaidi Port (甘拜地口岸), 8 kilometers away; Myitkyina (密支那) in Myanmar, 121 kilometers away.

    • Strategic Importance: Key junction for the China-India Road (史迪威公路) and part of the Southwest Silk Road (西南丝绸之路).

    Historical Background

Houqiao Port (猴桥口岸) has a rich history, dating back to the Ming (明朝) and Qing (清朝) Dynasties when it served as a customs checkpoint. The port was historically a key node on the ancient southwestern silk route. In the 1940s, during the construction of the China-India Road (also known as the Stilwell Road, 史迪威公路), it became a critical military supply route during the Second Sino-Japanese War (抗日战争).

    Key Historical Points:

    • Ancient History: Served as an essential trade and military defense point during the Ming (明朝) and Qing (清朝) Dynasties.

    • 20th Century: In the 1940s, it became part of the strategic China-India Road (史迪威公路), crucial for China's victory in the Anti-Japanese War (抗日战争).

    • Modern Era: In 2000, it was approved as a national first-class port by the State Council (国务院), and its infrastructure has since been upgraded, including new inspection facilities in 2013.

    Development of Houqiao Border Port

The port has evolved significantly over the years, especially after China's policy of opening up its borders. In 1993, after joint efforts by China and Myanmar, the Tengchong-Mysit Road (腾冲—密支那公路) was reopened, connecting Houqiao Port (猴桥口岸) to Myanmar. By 2007, the road was upgraded, marking a new phase in the port’s development.

    Growth and Modernization:

    • 2000: Approved as a national first-class port  by the State Council .

    • 2007: The Tengchong-Mysit Road (腾冲—密支那公路) was upgraded to a secondary highway, enhancing transportation efficiency.

    • 2010: Passenger flow reached 287,000 people, and the port handled 2.24 million tons of cargo worth $160 million USD.

    • 2013: New inspection facilities were completed, further improving customs procedures.

    • 2014: Passenger flow increased to 960,000, with cargo reaching 3 million tons, valued at $193 million USD.

    Infrastructure and Modern Developments:

    • Expansion: The construction of new inspection buildings and cargo facilities, located 6 kilometers and 25 kilometers from the border respectively, was completed in 2013.

    • Trade Growth: The port has seen a steady increase in both cargo and passenger traffic, with ongoing upgrades to keep pace with growing demand.

Strategic Importance in the "Belt and Road" Initiative

As part of China's Belt and Road Initiative (一带一路), Houqiao Border Port (猴桥口岸) plays a vital role in connecting China to South and Southeast Asia. The port will continue to be an essential part of the Yunnan Province’s strategy to strengthen ties with neighboring regions. The port is integral to the development of the Myanmar-China-India economic corridor (孟中印缅经济走廊) and has enhanced trade routes linking the region with key Southeast Asian and South Asian markets.

    Future Prospects:

    • Integration into "Belt and Road": The port will be a key node in Yunnan's strategy to build a regional connectivity center linking South and Southeast Asia.

    • Three-Dimensional Access: Along with the Houqiao Road Port (猴桥公路口岸), the Houqiao Railway Port (猴桥铁路口岸) and Tengchong Airport (腾冲机场) will form a comprehensive transportation hub for the region.

With its historical significance and current role in trade and international relations, Houqiao Border Port (猴桥口岸) continues to be an essential gateway in Yunnan Province (云南省), facilitating the movement of goods and people between China and Myanmar, and contributing to broader regional economic development. As the port continues to expand, it will undoubtedly play a critical role in the future of China’s southwestern trade networks and the broader Belt and Road Initiative (一带一路).
