Located in eastern Hubei Province (湖北省) on the southern bank of the Yangtze River, Ezhou (鄂州) is a charming riverside city known as the “City of One Hundred Lakes” and the “Land of Fish and Rice.” Situated between Wuhan (武汉) and Huangshi (黄石), Ezhou combines rich water landscapes, ancient Chu culture, fishing traditions, and peaceful countryside scenery. Although smaller than many famous Chinese cities, it offers travelers an authentic experience of the Yangtze River region.

    Why Visit Ezhou?

Liangzi Lake (梁子湖) – The Pearl of Eastern Hubei

Liangzi Lake (梁子湖) is one of Ezhou’s most famous natural attractions and one of the largest freshwater lakes in Hubei. Surrounded by wetlands, fishing villages, and green landscapes, the lake is ideal for boating, photography, cycling, and enjoying peaceful waterside scenery. The lake is also famous for its ecological environment and rich aquatic resources, especially the local Wuchang Bream (武昌鱼), a traditional delicacy originating from the region.

City of Lakes & Water Culture

Ezhou is home to more than 100 lakes and ponds, creating a unique landscape of waterways, wetlands, and rural scenery. The city’s connection with water has shaped its culture, economy, and cuisine for centuries. Visitors can explore lakeside parks, enjoy fishing experiences, taste fresh river cuisine, and discover the traditional lifestyle of communities living along the Yangtze River.

    Yangtze River Scenery (长江风光)

The Yangtze River forms an important part of Ezhou’s landscape and history. Riverside areas provide opportunities for walking, sightseeing, and enjoying views of passing boats and wide river channels. The city’s location near Wuhan and Huanggang also makes it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.

    Wuchang Bream Culture (武昌鱼文化)

Ezhou is regarded as the birthplace of Wuchang Bream (武昌鱼), one of China’s most famous freshwater fish dishes. The fish has a long history in Chinese cuisine and is closely associated with the waterways around Ezhou. Visitors can experience local food culture through traditional fish dishes, lake cuisine, and regional specialties that reflect the agricultural and fishing traditions of the area.

Ancient Chu Culture & Historical Heritage

As part of the historic Chu cultural region, Ezhou has a long history dating back thousands of years. The area has preserved cultural relics, ancient tombs, and archaeological discoveries connected with the development of central China. The city’s history reflects the interaction between river civilization, agriculture, and ancient Chinese states.

    Lakeside Ecology & Rural Experiences

The wetlands and countryside around Ezhou provide opportunities for eco-tourism and relaxation. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching, rural photography, cycling routes, and peaceful village landscapes. The combination of lakes, farmland, and rivers makes Ezhou a suitable destination for travelers seeking slower-paced experiences away from crowded tourist centers.

    Ezhou Culture & Local Life

Ezhou’s culture is closely connected with traditional Hubei lifestyles, including fishing, farming, folk customs, and regional cuisine. Local markets, riverside communities, and traditional food experiences allow visitors to experience the everyday life of the middle Yangtze River region.

    Food & Local Flavors

Ezhou cuisine highlights the freshwater resources of its lakes and rivers. Besides Wuchang Bream (武昌鱼), visitors can enjoy freshwater fish dishes, lotus root dishes, rice-based foods, and traditional Hubei flavors. The city’s cuisine reflects the agricultural richness of the “fish and rice homeland” of the Yangtze River basin.
