Wuhu (芜湖) is a historic prefecture-level city in southeastern Anhui Province (安徽省), located on the southeast bank of the Yangtze River (长江). With a history of more than 2,500 years, Wuhu has developed from an ancient riverside settlement into an important economic, transportation, and cultural city in the Yangtze River region. Known as the “River City of Anhui”, Wuhu combines waterfront landscapes, traditional culture, modern urban life, and rich local cuisine.

Located near the center of the Yangtze River Delta economic region, Wuhu borders Xuancheng (宣城) to the southeast, Chizhou (池州) and Tongling (铜陵) to the southwest, Hefei (合肥) to the northwest, Ma’anshan (马鞍山) to the northeast, and Jiangsu Province (江苏省) to the east. Its convenient location, only about 90 kilometers from Nanjing (南京), makes it an important gateway for exploring Anhui and the surrounding Jiangnan region.

    Why Visit Wuhu?

Zheshan Mountain (赭山) – Cultural Landmark of Wuhu:

Zheshan Mountain is one of the most famous symbols of Wuhu and an important cultural landmark in the city. Located in the urban area, the mountain combines natural scenery with historical heritage, featuring temples, pavilions, gardens, and walking paths. It has long been a place for local residents and visitors to enjoy views of the city and experience traditional Jiangnan landscapes.

Mirror Lake (镜湖) – Elegant Jiangnan Water Landscape:

Mirror Lake is a beautiful urban lake in the center of Wuhu, famous for its peaceful waters, gardens, and cultural atmosphere. Surrounded by historic buildings and green spaces, the lake represents the classic Jiangnan scenery of water, bridges, and gardens. Visitors can enjoy relaxing walks, photography, and the tranquil atmosphere of this city oasis.

Jiuzi Ancient Town (鸠兹古镇) – Traditional Huizhou & Jiangnan Culture:

Jiuzi Ancient Town recreates the historical atmosphere of old Wuhu, once known as an important commercial city along the Yangtze River. The town features traditional-style streets, ancient-style buildings, cultural performances, and local shops, allowing visitors to experience the lifestyle and commercial culture of historic Jiangnan towns.

Yangtze River Scenery & Riverside Culture (长江文化):

As a city located along the Yangtze River, Wuhu has a close connection with river culture, trade, and transportation. The riverside area offers beautiful views of the Yangtze River, urban skylines, and waterfront landscapes. The city’s historical development has been closely linked with the river, making it an important destination for understanding the role of the Yangtze River in Chinese civilization and economy.

Fantawild Theme Parks (方特旅游区) – Family Entertainment Destination:

Wuhu is home to the famous Fantawild tourism area, one of the largest theme park complexes in China. The parks combine advanced technology, animation, cultural themes, and entertainment experiences, making Wuhu a popular destination for families and younger travelers.

    Traditional Handicrafts & Cultural Heritage:

Wuhu has a long tradition of craftsmanship and folk culture. The city is known for traditional arts such as iron painting (铁画), a unique Chinese metal art form that originated in Wuhu during the Qing Dynasty. Wuhu iron painting combines painting techniques with iron forging, creating delicate artworks featuring landscapes, flowers, birds, and traditional Chinese themes.

    Local Food Culture (芜湖美食):

Wuhu cuisine belongs to the broader Hui Cuisine (徽菜) tradition while also being influenced by Jiangnan and Yangtze River food cultures. The city is famous for fresh river ingredients, traditional snacks, and local flavors.

Visitors can enjoy specialties such as Wuhu dried tofu (芜湖干丝), river fish dishes, traditional Anhui-style dishes, and local snacks that reflect the combination of Anhui and Jiangnan culinary traditions.
