Best Time to Visit Chongqing

March to May and September to October are the best tourist seasons in chongqing. This period of time is the spring and autumn season in Chongqing, the weather is not cold or hot, and the temperature is comfortable. If you want to take a boat trip cruising the Yangtze river and Jialin river, you need to take a coat. In addition, from October to April in the following year, Chongqing has more fog than any other time of year, so although it is hot in summer, there is less fog comparing with other seasons. What to Pack for Chongqing Travel

  • Spring(March-May): Spring comes in late February or early March and lasts until early May. The temperature rises rapidly, but not stable. Sweaters and jackets are fine for the weather, but keep long-sleeved shirts/thin coat ready for when the weather gets warmer.
  • Summer(June-September): Summer in Chongqing is long and hot from June to September. Just wear summer clothes such as T-shirts, skirts and shorts, remember to bring umbrellas and sunscreen, and drink a lot of water when travelling to Chongqing in summer. 
  • Autumn(October-November): Autumn is usually pleasantly cool from October to November. After entering November, the temperature drops gradually. T-shirts, thin sweaters and coats are needed at this time.
  • Winter(December-February): In winter, Chongqing's weather is mild and gloomy, with little snow. There is little frost or snow, but a lot of fog and mist. Usually, down or cotton jacket, sweater and thick jeans are suitable for the weather. Due to the wet and cold weather, it is best to wear down jacket. 

How Many Days Are Needed for Chongqing Travel

Scenic spots in Chongqing are mostly concentrated in the downtown, it is suggested to spend 2-3 days travelling in the city center. Most scenic spots in the downtown can be available by subway, which is very time-saving. China's 144-hour visa-free transit policy allows air travelers from 53 countries to transit and stay in some designated Chinese cities for 144 hours (6 days). Starting from Dec 1, 2019, Chongqing has implemented a 144-hour visa-free transit policy for people from 53 countries. Chongqing Shopping

Consumption Level

Consumption level in Chongqing is about the same as Chengdu, but lower than Beijing and Shanghai.

  • Scenic Spot: Overall consumption level is not high. Travelling in Chongqing, most of the activities are in the main urban areas, most of the must-visit attractions such as Hongya Cave, Ciqikou and Three Gorge Museum are open for free. And other attractions' admission is not expensive, for example, the river cableway is 20 yuan per person for single trip and 30 yuan per person for round trip. If going to the surrounding Wulong or Dazu Rock Carving, consumption will be relatively higher, at least per capita 200-300 yuan a day.
  • Dining: Travel in chongqing, one of the most important things is to taste local food, so the cost of food and beverage is naturally relatively high, but  the actual consumption is not high. A bowl of hot and sour rice noodles is 5-6 yuan per portion, spicy noodles 6-10 yuan per portion, and Chaoshou 10-15 yuan per portion. The old hot pot is usually per capita 40-60 yuan, and high-end new style hot pot is more expensive, per capita 80-100 yuan. The dining price at Hongya cave and Ciqikou ancient town are about twice as much elsewhere.
  • Accommodation: Take Jiefangbei and Hongya Cave for example, because of the good location, the hotel price is relatively high, 5-star hotels in the off-season are at least 500 yuan, economy hotels are about 200-300 yuan for Twins Room. Youth hotels are relatively cheaper, about 50 yuan/night. 
  • Transportation: Chongqing's transportation consumption is not high. You can get around the city mainly by metro, costing 2-7 yuan. And scenic spots in Yuzhong District are concentrated, you can go on foot. If you really want to take a taxi, the starting price is 10 yuan.

Notes: 

  • Travel to Chongqing in summer, you'd better take cappa or long-sleeved clothes, to protect youselves from strong ultraviolet ray. In addition, rain gears and anti-mosquito drugs are essential.
  • Chongqing's climate is humid, so take several sets of lightweight clothes for changing and washing.
  • When taking a bus in Chongqing, pay attention to the bus stops. Many places in Chongqing are one-way streets, so you may have to walk a long way to take the bus on your return journey.
  • The diet of Chongqing is given priority to with spicy and hot. If you are not accustomed to eat spicy food, take more medicine for decreasing the internal heat. 
  • There are a lot of mountain roads in Chongqing, and it is very hard to go uphill and downhill, so it is recommended to choose comfortable and light shoes to go out.
  • The temperature difference in Chongqing is large after raining, remember to prepare a coat.
