Xingwang Ewenki Township (兴旺鄂温克族乡) is located in Nehe City (讷河市), under Qiqihar (齐齐哈尔市), Heilongjiang Province (黑龙江省), on the eastern bank of the Nenjiang River (嫩江). It is the only agricultural Ewenki settlement in Heilongjiang and one of the rarest in China.
Set within the fertile Songnen Plain (松嫩平原), the area combines farming, herding, and fishing traditions. As a historic homeland of the “Solon” Ewenki people, dating back to the 17th century, the township is home to nationally recognized ethnic villages such as Suolun Village (索伦村) and Bailu Village (百路村). With rich intangible heritage like the Sebin Festival (瑟宾节), traditional cone-shaped dwellings, and birch bark craftsmanship, it offers a unique blend of ethnic culture and northern rural landscapes.
Ethnic Culture
Ewenki People (鄂温克族)
The Ewenki are a small northern ethnic group with a population of around 34,000 in China, mainly distributed across Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang. Xingwang Township represents the best-preserved agricultural Ewenki community.
- Origins: Descended from ancient forest hunting tribes around Lake Baikal and the upper Heilongjiang River
- History: Known historically as “Solon,” they migrated south in the 17th century and were incorporated into the Qing Dynasty’s “Butha Eight Banners”
- Language: Ewenki (Altaic, Tungusic branch), traditionally without a written system
- Lifestyle: A unique hybrid of farming and pastoral culture, distinct from forest and nomadic Ewenki groups
