Xiamen University is located in Siming District on the island of Xiamen, which is just north of Taiwan and south of the mainland coast. The city of Xiamen is comprised of five districts, two on the island and three on the mainland. Xiamen, known as Amoy in Hokkien dialect, is a major deepwater port, whose ships come and go around the world. The city was one of the first Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in China, but rapid economic development has not damaged its environment. History of Xiamen University

In 1919, Tan Kah Kee, an overseas Chinese businessman, donated millions of dollars to endow Amoy University in the city of Amoy (Xiamen). The university was founded in 1921. Tan transferred administration of Amoy University to the Nationalist government in 1937, and the institution became a national university.

In 1995, Xiamen University was selected to participate in the 211 Project, a national government initiative to provide increased financial resources for China’s most promising universities. In 2000, the university was selected for the 985 Project, a national and local government initiative to provide funding for facilities construction and faculty hiring to bolster China’s top universities.

In September 2017, Xiamen was recognized as a Class A institution in the Double First Class University Plan, a national government initiative to cultivate a group of elite Chinese universities into “world-class” institutions by 2050.

Best Seasons to Visit Xiamen

Xiamen has a subtropical climate, which is generally temperate with abundant rainwater. It has an average annual temperature of approximately 21 centigrade. There is no intense heat in summer and no extreme cold in winter in Xiamen. The city has an average annual rainfall of about 1200mm (47 inches), mainly during the months from May to August. Wind power reaches Grade 3 to 4 in general, with northeast wind representing the dominant wind direction. Owing to the air currents resulting from the difference in temperature in the Pacific, Xiamen is hit by typhoon three or four times annually on average, which mainly occurs during the months from July to September. Xiamen is suitable for traveling all year round, and the best seasons are spring and autumn.

To get there, take a 20-minute walk south from the Zhongshan Road and Gulangyu ferry area, along either Lujiang Road or Siming Road, jump in a taxi or take a bus. Buses that go to the main gate include #1, 15, 18, 21, 29, 71 and 82. #2 or 22 go to other parts of the university.
