A Visit to Niujie Food Street
When visiting Yinchuan, this food street should be on your list. As a seasoned food lover, my first stop in the city was naturally the famous Niujie Food Street. On the way from the airport to the city center, I learned from a local taxi driver that the street is located next to the Nanguan Mosque (南关清真寺) in the old town. The street is often compared to Xi’an's Muslim Quarter (西安回民街) for its variety of food.
Walking through the street, you’ll find an array of lamb dishes, including Lamb Bone (牛骨), Five-Spiced Lamb Head (五香羊羔头), Hand-Grabbed Lamb (手抓滩羊肉), Lamb Dumplings (羊肉饺子), and Lamb Soup Bread (羊肉泡馍). Interestingly, despite its name, Niujie is not focused on beef but is dominated by lamb dishes, which gives it a unique character.
Dining Experience
Although we arrived around lunchtime, many of the shops were still closed. A shop owner mentioned that business is slow here due to the smaller local population, and the high cost of goods. He planned to move to Xi’an (西安) for better opportunities.
After visiting the Nanguan Mosque (南关清真寺), we headed to the street and found it quieter than usual, as it was during Ramadan, and many locals were fasting until sunset. The street was less crowded compared to Beijing's Niujie (北京牛街), where it was more bustling, but the cultural vibe was just as strong.
Must-Try Local Dishes
When in Ningxia, there are a few must-try dishes, including:
While lamb tripe, lamb hotpot, and Lamb Soup Bread (羊肉泡馍) are readily available throughout the region, these specialties truly reflect the essence of Ningxia's unique flavors.
Dining Highlights
For an unforgettable experience, head to Tongxinzhai (同心斋), where the delicious Beef Bone (牛骨) is a must-try. The Xixia Beer (西夏啤酒) is an essential part of the meal, and its taste is unique, reminiscent of Urumqi's Wusu Beer (乌苏啤酒) from Xinjiang (新疆).
As the day turns to night, the street becomes lively again. The Niujie Halal Supermarket (牛街清真超市) is a great place for buying packaged goods like dried beef and chestnuts to take home.
