Hulun River

Hulun Lake (simplified Chinese: 呼伦湖; traditional Chinese: 呼倫湖; pinyin: Hūlún Hú; Mongolian: hölön nuur Хөлөн нуур, lit. foot lake) or Dalai Lake (Mongolian: Dalai nuur Далай нуур, lit. ocean lake), is a large lake in the Inner Mongolia region of northern China.

Introduction of Hulun River

Hulun Lake is also known as Dalai Lake, the largest fresh water lake in Inner Mongolia and 5th largest in China. Hulun Lake is fed by two rivers – one is known as the Kelulun River, which runs from the west, and the other Orshun River, which runs from the south. The the Orshun River connects Hulun Lake and Beier Lake. Both the Hulunbuir Grassland and the Hulunbuir City are named after the two sister lakes – Hulun Lake and Beier Lake. The Beier Lake is owned both by Mongolia and China.

Hulun Lake has a shape of an irregular rectangle with an area of 2,339 square kilometers. The Hulun Lake is rich in fishes and waterfowl. There are various kinds of cash fish like carp, red fins, pike, catfish and rare white shrimp. The lake is a mecca for over 200 migrating bird species, including crane, gull, swan, wild goose, duck and lovebird.

It is one of the five largest freshwater lakes in all of China, covering approximately 2,339 km².

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Hulun Lake is Summer and Winter. The Hulun Lake is an ideal summer resort in terms of cool climate, beautiful scenery and fresh air. If you come here in summer, you are able to participate in many activities such as boating on the lake, fishing on the lakeshore, sunbathing, bird watching. You can also have a bite of the local all-fish feast with numerous delicious and nourishing dishes of fish. If you come in winter, it is interesting to see how local people catch fish under the ice.

What you Can do around Hulun Lake

On the west of the Hulun Lake is the reception center for tourists traveling from afar. People can stay overnight on the grassland, having horse riding, watching the performances of wrestling and horse racing. In the evening, join in the bonfire party under the stary sky, singing and dancing. Life is so beautiful!

How to Get to Hulunbuir

Hulunbuir Dongshan International Airport, the nearest airport to the grassland, is in the Hailar District of Hulunbuir City. The distance between the airport and the grassland is about 150 km. You can hire a driver to take you to and from the grassland.
