Bao’an nationality is one of the minority nationalities in China. Now their population is more than 10,000. The regions that they live in compact communities are Dadun, Ganhetan, Meipo, Gaoli and other villages, Jishishan autonomous county of Bao’an, Dongxiang and Sala nationalities, Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu province.

Bao’an nationality formed by the long-term contact and merging of Semu people that came to the east after the Mongolian west expedition with the Mongolian, Tibetan, Hui, Han and other nationalities that believed in Islam The name of  “Bao’an” originates from the name of their living place—the Bao’an town on the sides of Longwu River, Tongren county, Qinghai province.

Bao’an nationality has their own language, but no written words. Bao’an language belongs to the Mongolian group of Chinese and Tibetan language system, and has close relationship with Mongolian, the Tu nationality’s language, the Dongxiang language and eastern Yugu language. Now most of the Bao’an people also have a good command of Chinese.

Bao’an nationality is mainly engaged in agriculture, and concurrently livestock husbandry, handicraft and sideline production. “Bao’an waist sword” is a traditional handicraft article that is renowned at home and abroad, with practical, decoration and collection value.

Bao’an nationality believes in Islam, their living custom is similar with that of Hui, Dongxiang and Sala nationalities around them.
