Simatai a section of the Great Wall of China located in the north of Miyun County, 120 km northeast of Beijing. Located in Gubekou Town to the northeast of Miyun District of Beijing, adjacent to Gubei Water Town.  It was the original creation of the famous General Qi Jiguang and was completed under the supervision of him.

Why is Simatai Great Wall So Special

This section of Great Wall is famous for its 5 features of “steepness, compactness, queerness, wonderfulne and comprehensiveness”. Simatai Great Wall is exquisite in its architecture details and is grand as a whole structure along the mountains. This wall is the only section that remains the original characters of Ming Dynasty. Simatai is famous for its extraordinary views and steep climbs, making it a great choice for the more adventurous.

Independent Travel

From Beijing-Chengdu Expressway to Simatai Exit 2 kilometers, or from 101 National Highway to Tanghe Bridge (with the archway of Simatai Great Wall Scenic Area), turn right 8 kilometers.

You can take tourist buses from Beijing tourism distribution center to Simatai Great Wall. The tourist buses are only available from middle April to Oct. 26 during the high season. It will take three hour to get to Simatai.

Accommodation
The hotels at Simatai are the best among of the Great Wall’s sections. The Gubei Water Town resort at the foot of the Great Wall has several 5-star hotels, where you can enjoy a hot spring, massage, and a night swim after your evening stroll.

Security
Simatai Great Wall has been partially restored and opened. The tourist area is limited to its east section, so the hiking from west Simatai to Jinshanling is not allowed.

Best Time to Visit

In April, May, and September, the warm weather is very comfortable for visitors. With lush plants covering the mountain, the winding wall looks like a dragon lying on a green sea. In October, red leaves cover the ridge, offering you another wonderful scene.
