Following the peaceful liberation of Tibet, the region has seen significant economic advancements, with people's living standards improving remarkably. After the democratic reform, Tibet's social and productive forces were liberated, leading to unprecedented development. In 2000, Tibet's total output value was 50 times higher than it was in 1959, at the beginning of the democratic reform.

Tibet's infrastructure has developed from scratch and continues to grow and expand. Agriculture has been mechanized, and urban and rural incomes have steadily increased. A majority of the population has broken free from poverty, and many are now enjoying a comfortable standard of living. Notably, in 2000, Lhasa led the country in per capita color TVs, mobile phones, and the highest per capita housing area.

Modern Industry and Connectivity

Today, Tibet boasts several hundred modern industrial enterprises, including those in electric power, mining, cement, machine maintenance, wool spinning, food production, and more. The foundation for a modern industry with Tibetan characteristics is now firmly in place.

A comprehensive road network radiates from Lhasa, including key highways such as the Qinghai-Xizang Highway, Sichuan-Xizang Highway, Xinjiang-Xizang Highway, Yunnan-Xizang Highway, and the China-Nepal Highway. This expansive network consists of 15 main highways and 315 feeder routes, connecting every county and 77% of Tibet's townships. Additionally, air transport has rapidly developed, and the construction of the Qinghai-Xizang Railway has further enhanced accessibility.

Education, Health, and Culture

The development of education, science and technology, culture, and health has flourished in Tibet. The general quality of education and scientific awareness has improved among Tibet’s diverse nationalities. The freedom to practice religion has been firmly respected, with the right to worship protected for the region’s religious population.

Government Support and Strategic Initiatives

Over the past 50 years, the Chinese government has provided energetic support to Tibet in various forms—labor, resources, financial backing, technology, and policy. Since the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee, four forums have been convened to discuss Tibet's development, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving the region’s economy and social stability.

The first forum, held in 1980, set the goal of allowing Tibet’s peasants and herders to recover, develop production, and increase prosperity. The second forum in 1984 further relaxed policies and introduced urgent infrastructure projects, with nine provinces and cities pledging assistance. The third forum in 1994 accelerated development and expanded financial support, with 62 key projects funded by the government and 15 provinces. The fourth forum in 2001 broadened the scope of preferential policies and increased the financial and project support for Tibet.

Investment and Future Growth

Over the past five decades, the Central Government has invested over 500 billion yuan in Tibet, with provinces and cities contributing an additional 22.4 billion yuan to 576 projects. This has driven the region's rapid economic and social growth.

The country is committed to investing 31.2 billion yuan in Tibet during the 10th "Five-Year Plan," constructing 117 key projects. An additional 37.9 billion yuan in financial aid and 10.62 billion yuan from supporting provinces will further ensure Tibet’s continued development.
