Ethnic Towns in China
Ethnic towns in China are town-level administrative areas established in places where ethnic minorities live together. Towns with ethnic minorities accounting for more than 30% of the total population may apply for the establishment of ethnic towns in accordance with regulations; in special cases, the proportion may be slightly lower. The first ethnic town in China, Yichegashan Xibo Town(伊车嘎善锡伯族乡), Huocheng County, Yili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was founded in November 1953.
List of Ethnic Towns in China
There are 1248 ethnic towns and townships in China, which are distributed in 28 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. Among them, 59 ethnic towns are distributed in 9 provinces. There are 47 minority nationalities that have established minority towns in China. The eight minorities that have not established minority towns are Jingpo, Mulao, Sala, Nu, Bonan, Dulong, Gaoshan, and Jing. Guizhou and Yunnan provinces have the largest number of ethnic towns, followed by Sichuan and Hunan provinces.
