The Maonan Ethnic Group (毛南族) is an ancient minority in the karst mountain regions of Southwest China. According to the 2020 seventh national census, the total population was 124,092, making it a relatively small ethnic group. The core settlement areas are Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County (环江毛南族自治县, Guangxi 河池市), which accounts for 70% of the national Maonan population, followed by Pingtang County (平塘县, Guizhou 贵州) and Dushan County (独山县, Guizhou 贵州), accounting for 30%. Small populations are scattered in Nandan (南丹), Du’an (都安), Yizhou (宜州, Guangxi 广西), and Huishui (惠水, Guizhou 贵州).
The Maonan trace their origins to the Lingnan Baiyue Liao and Lingzhi branches, historically called “Maotan” or “Maonan,” officially renamed Maonan in 1986. The Maonan language (毛南语) belongs to the Dong-Shui branch of the Zhuang-Dong family, Sino-Tibetan language, and has no indigenous script; Chinese characters are widely used. Their culture is centered on Nuo culture, flower bamboo hats, mountain cattle breeding, and sour food traditions, representing classic karst mountain farming culture.
