The Lisu (傈僳族) are an ancient transboundary mountain ethnic group in southwest China. According to the 2020 National Census, their total population is approximately 702,800, belonging to the Tibeto-Burman Yi branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. They use a Latin-based script along with Mandarin Chinese.
Origin & Migration: Descendants of the ancient Di-Qiang tribes, migrating south from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Core Settlement: Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture (怒江傈僳族自治州, Yunnan), accounting for 70% of the national Lisu population. Secondary settlements include Weixi (维西, Diqing), Yongsheng (永胜, Lijiang), and Liangshan (凉山, Sichuan).
