The Lahu Ethnic Group (拉祜族) is an ancient cross-border mountain people of Southwest China. According to the 2020 national census, the total population is 499,200, belonging to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. The Lahu have no written language of their own and use Mandarin Chinese (汉语) for communication. The term “Lahu” means “Tiger-Hunting People”, originating from ancient Di-Qiang tribes migrating south from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to finally settle in southwestern Yunnan. The core settlement is Lancang Lahu Autonomous County (澜沧拉祜族自治县) in Pu’er City (普洱市), accounting for 50% of all Lahu, followed by Menglian (孟连), Ximeng (西盟), and Shuangjiang (临沧双江). As a direct-transition ethnic group, Lahu culture centers around gourd totems, the creation epic “Mupa Mipa (牡帕密帕)”, Lusheng dance (芦笙舞), and black cloth-silver bubble costumes (黑布银泡服饰).
