The Kinu people (基诺族) are China’s 56th officially recognized ethnic group, confirmed in 1979. According to the 2020 census, their total population is 26,025, making them one of the rare ethnic groups unique to Yunnan Province (云南省). The name “Kinu” means “descendants of maternal uncles,” and historically they were called “Youle (攸乐).” They have lived for generations in the Kinu Mountain area (基诺山) of Xishuangbanna (西双版纳). The Kinu have no native writing system; historically, they recorded events on bamboo and wooden tablets. Daily communication is conducted in Mandarin, while their language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Yi language group. The community survives through mountain agriculture, hunting, and ancient tea cultivation, being the original settlers of Youle Ancient Tea Mountains (攸乐山古茶山), with deep respect for the sun and ancestors, earning the reputation as the “Children of the Sun (太阳之子).”

    Distribution Across China (2020)

    Folk Culture

    Traditional Housing

Stilted bamboo houses (高脚干栏式竹楼) with “Kongming hat” shaped roofs, built from bamboo and wood with thatched tops. The lower floor houses livestock, while the upper floor is residential, featuring a central hearth (火塘) kept burning year-round for heating, cooking, and rituals. Ventilated and moisture-resistant, these homes suit the tropical rainforest climate, and courtyards often host bamboo groves and banana plants.

    • Handmade “Kandao Cloth” (砍刀布) using plant dyes, decorated with sun, geometric, and floral motifs.
    • Men: Collarless short jackets, loose long pants, black head wraps, carrying a small machete and cloth bag. Simple, sturdy, and masculine.
    • Women: Embroidered jackets over long skirts, elegant vests, silver earrings and necklaces, colorful and eye-catching.

    Intangible Cultural Heritage

    • Kinu Drum Dance (大鼓舞): National-level heritage, featuring sun-decorated drums, performed during festivals and rituals as the cultural centerpiece.

    • Ethnic Paper-Cutting: Sun, hunting, and nature motifs, used in ceremonies and festivals.

    Marriage Customs

Marriages respect free choice, with maternal uncles’ approval mandatory. Wedding rituals include bride capture ceremonies, blessing around the hearth by elders, and drum dance celebrations. Feasts feature bamboo rice, wild-roasted meats, and homemade rice wine, lasting 2-3 days, with post-marriage visits to elders to maintain family bonds.

    Coming-of-Age Ceremony

    • Boys (13-15 years): Participate in cattle killing, tattoos, and hunting for village council and marriage eligibility.
    • Girls: Teeth dyeing, clothing transition, and learning textile work, marking social adulthood.
