Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center located 9 km east to Dunhuang city, around 16 km from Mogao grottoes. The center was open on August 1st 2014, which covers an area of 100, 000 sq meters with total investment of more than 3,000,000 RMB. The center was an important part of Mogao grottoes protection and development project “and was approved by National Development and Reform Commission. It uses digital technology and multimedia tools to display the historical and cultural background of Dunhuang as well as the exquisite cave art of Mogao.

In the tourist information center 15 kilometers away from the Mogao Caves, with a click of the mouse, a huge statute of Sakyamuni unfolded slowly on a bright spherical screen of 18 meters in diameter, and details of “Flying Apsaras”—the ceiling frescos ten meters high above the ground— were also in full view.

With the help of advanced technology, the Digital Mogao Caves establishes classified digital archives of the caves and frescos, collects and stores digital samples of the cultural relics at Dunhuang. The details that cannot be viewed in the caves due to limited time and access can be seen in full splendour by accessing a digital terminal and browsing the panoramic simulations.
