Yueyang Climate

Yueyang(岳阳) is a prefecture-level city on the southern shores of Dongting Lake  in the northeastern corner of Hunan Province. Yueyang is the only international trade port city in Hunan and a famous port city in China, at the same time, Yueyang's comprehensive economic strength ranks second only to Changsha, the provincial capital.

Yueyang Climate 

Yueyang City is located in the East Asian monsoon climate zone. The climatic zone has the transitional nature of the mid-subtropical to the northern subtropical zone and enjoys a humid continental monsoon climate, which has these characteristics: warm and humid, four distinct seasons, rich in heat, short cold period, long frost-free period, hot summer, sufficient rain, distinct rainy season, concentrated precipitation.

Yueyang Temperature

The annual average temperature is between 16.5 and 17.2 °C, the extreme maximum temperature is 39.3 to 40.8 °C, and the extreme minimum temperature is -11.4 to -18.1 °C. The annual average temperature in the urban area is at 17.0 °C.

Yueyang Precipitation

The annual average precipitation is 1,289.8~1,556.2 mm, which is more in spring and summer, less in autumn and winter, more in the east and less in the west. The rainfall in spring and summer accounts for 70%-73% of the whole year, and the annual distribution of rainfall is uneven with the maximum of  2,336.5 mm and the minimum of only 750.9 mm.

The annual sunshine hours are 1,590.2 to 1,722.3 hours, which has a feature that the sunshine hours in north are more than that in south and the sunshine hours in the west are more than that in east. What's more, the annual frost-free period is 256-285 days.

The dominant wind direction of the city is north wind and northeast wind, and the annual average wind speed is 2.0-2.7 m/s. In the growing season, the amount of sunshine, heat and water is sufficient. What's more, the agricultural climate condition is better.

Best Time to Visit Yueyang

The best time to visit Yueyang for general outdoor tourist activities is from late May to early September, with a peak score in the third week of August. The best time to visit Yueyang for hot-weather activities is from early July to mid August, with a peak score in the last week of July.

  • Spring (March-May): Humidity and temperatures make this season feel moderate. Rain is very common with 9 to 11 days of significant precipitation per month. Spring is the busiest for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for things to do.
  • Summer (June-August): The middle-year months have very comfortable weather with high temperatures that are quite warm. These months see moderate precipitation with 6 to 10 days of precipitation per month. June-August is the off season for tourism in Yueyang, so accommodation may cost less than usual.
  • Fall (September-November): The temperature in autumn ranges from 83°F (28.3°C) and 56.8°F (13.8°C), which will feel very nice given the humidity and wind. Tourism is the second busiest during these months due to the weather.
  • Winter (December-February): It is too cold this time of year in Yueyang to be enjoyable for travelers. The period is fairly low season for tourism.

What to Pack

  • Spring: wind coat, jacket and thin sweaters.
