    The Gelao ethnic group (仡佬族) is one of the oldest indigenous peoples of Southwest China, with roots tracing back to the ancient Liao people (僚人) and deep historical connections to the Yelang Kingdom (夜郎国). According to the 2020 census, the total population is approximately 677,500, with 96% residing in Guizhou Province (贵州省), and the remainder scattered across Guangxi (广西), Yunnan (云南), and Chongqing (重庆).

    The Gelao language belongs to the Sino-Tibetan family, though its precise classification remains uncertain. Only a few elderly people still speak it fluently. Modern Gelao people use Chinese characters (汉文) for writing.

    Core cultural features include cinnabar culture (丹砂文化), sky worship & ancestor rituals (祭天朝祖), San Yao Table Banquets (三幺台), Nuo opera (傩戏), Mao Dragon Dance (毛龙舞), and stilted houses (吊脚楼), making the Gelao an important contributor to the mountain culture of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau (云贵高原山地文化).

    Traditional Clothing

    Heavy, rustic, dominated by blue-black tones; fine embroidery & batik patterns.

    • Guests served glutinous rice wine, oil tea, cured meat; sit on the kang fireplace’s main seat; remove shoes indoors.
    • Forbidden: Cutting sacred trees, making noise in sacred forests, stepping on field ridges or water sources.
    • Rituals: Women may not participate in dragon or sacred tree worship; no whistling indoors; avoid stepping over fire tripod; pointing with toes is disrespectful.

    • Animism (core belief): Worship of mountain, tree, water, stone, sun, and ox gods; nature and ancestors are intertwined; regular offerings for harvest and safety.
    • Ancestor Worship: Ancestral shrines at home; offerings of wine, meat, glutinous rice cakes; Shenyu Ancestral Hall (申佑祠堂, Longtan Ancient Village) for ceremonial gatherings.
