The DuLong Ethnic Group (独龙族) is one of China’s smallest ethnic minorities, self-named “DuLong (独龙).” Historically called Qiu people (俅人), they descend from ancient Di-Qiang tribes. They have lived for generations in the DuLong River (独龙江) Gorge in northwest Yunnan (云南), long isolated from the outside world. In 2018, the entire ethnic group achieved poverty alleviation, completing a “millennial leap.” According to the 2020 national census, their population is 7,310, with 98% concentrated in DuLongjiang Township (独龙江乡), Gongshan DuLong and Nu Autonomous County (贡山独龙族怒族自治县), Nujiang Prefecture (怒江州)—making them the smallest ethnic group in Yunnan. The DuLong language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan family. They have no native script and use Chinese for written communication.
