Xundian Hui and Yi Autonomous County (寻甸回族彝族自治县) belongs to Kunming City (昆明市), Yunnan Province (云南省). Located about 70 kilometers northeast of downtown Kunming, it is the only Hui autonomous county near the provincial capital and one of the best short-trip destinations for
Yunnan halal travel. With an altitude range of about 1,445–3,294 meters, Xundian has a mild highland climate and is suitable for Muslim travelers from the Middle East, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and other Southeast Asian countries throughout the year.
The county covers about 3,588.38 square kilometers and governs 3 subdistricts, 9 towns, and 4 townships. The county seat is Rende Subdistrict (仁德街道), the main Hui Muslim settlement, halal dining area, hotel base, and transport hub.
Xundian is easy to reach from Kunming by expressway. The Yinkun Expressway, Hangrui Expressway, and Wutangxun Expressway pass through or connect the county, making private tours smooth and convenient. Buses from Kunming North Bus Station also run to Xundian daily. For overseas Muslim groups, Xundian is ideal for a one-day study tour, two-day cultural trip, or a short extension from Kunming.
Xundian combines highland grasslands, canyons, waterfalls, natural hot springs, Red Army Long March history, ancient Hui mosques, halal cuisine, and Yi ethnic customs. This makes it a rare destination where Islamic culture, ethnic heritage, revolutionary history, and natural scenery can be experienced in one route.
Hui Muslim History in Xundian
The Hui Muslims of Xundian mainly trace their roots to military settlement, trade migration, and caravan routes during the Yuan and Ming periods. Many Hui families moved from Jiangnan, Shaanxi, Gansu, and other regions, settling for more than 700 years around Rende, Tangzi (塘子), Kedu Dangui Village (柯渡丹桂村), and Sanyuanzhuang (三元庄).
Historically, Xundian was an important halal beef and lamb trading center on the northeastern Yunnan section of the Tea Horse Road. Xundian halal dried beef, known locally as niuganba, has a history of around 600 years and has become one of Yunnan’s most famous Muslim food specialties. Traditionally, cattle are slaughtered under Islamic practice by qualified religious personnel, making this food culture a strong Halal Yunnan identity.
Xundian’s cultural landscape is shaped by Hui Islamic heritage, Yi folk traditions, and Red Army Long March history. Several mosques are also linked with revolutionary sites, creating a distinctive study-travel theme found in few other Muslim destinations in China.
Muslim Population, Religious Life and Hui Communities
Xundian has a registered population of about 579,900. Ethnic minorities account for about 24.3% of the county population, and Hui Muslims number around 73,400, making Xundian the largest Hui Muslim county under Kunming.
Most local Muslims follow Sunni Islam under the Hanafi school. The religious atmosphere is peaceful and community-based, with regular cultural exchanges and no major sectarian conflict.
The four main Hui settlement areas are Rende county seat, Tangzi, Kedu Dangui Village, and the rural areas around Yangjie (羊街) and Qixing (七星). The county has 42 registered mosques, covering all major Hui villages. The three most important ancient mosques are in the county seat, Tangzi, and Dangui, and they can host large Friday Jumu’ah gatherings.
Halal Services for Overseas Muslim Travelers
Xundian is one of the most convenient halal destinations near Kunming. Beef and lamb are prepared according to Islamic practice, and many restaurants, snack shops, markets, and township eateries display green halal signs. Independent halal kitchens are common in Hui areas, and dishes can be adjusted for Middle Eastern, Malaysian, and Indonesian tastes.
The county’s halal food economy is strongly linked with beef processing, halal dried beef, lamb soup hotpot, Muslim banquets, and Hui snacks. Muslim travelers can find halal meals in the county seat, Tangzi, Dangui, Yangjie, Qixing, and several scenic routes.
Prayer is also easy to arrange. Tangzi Mosque, Dangui Mosque, and Yuping South Street Mosque are open for daily prayers and Friday Jumu’ah. Smaller township mosques can be used during village tours. In grassland, hot spring, and canyon areas without mosque facilities, private tours can prepare prayer mats, portable water bottles for wudu, and quiet hotel rooms for prayer.
Hui Festivals and Intangible Cultural Heritage
Eid al-Fitr is one of the liveliest times to visit Xundian’s Hui villages. Local Muslims gather for prayer, prepare youxiang fried bread, sanzi pastries, Hui banquets, and family meals. Eid al-Adha includes prayer, sacrificial customs, halal village banquets, and community hospitality.
Xundian’s most famous Hui heritage is halal dried beef-making. The process includes Islamic slaughtering, traditional seasoning, air-drying, and careful storage. Other recommended cultural experiences include Hui youxiang, halal Eight-Bowl banquets, Gongshan lamb soup hotpot, mosque wood carving, Arabic-script brick carving, Hui banquet songs, and Hui paper-cutting.
Multi-Ethnic Culture in Xundian
Xundian is also home to Yi communities, and local culture includes the Yi Torch Festival, Yangjie drum dance, highland pastoral traditions, and village markets. Combined with Hui Islamic customs and Red Army Long March history, Xundian offers a unique travel theme: ancient mosques, halal food, ethnic culture, red heritage, grasslands, and hot springs in one destination.

Tangzi Mosque
Tangzi Mosque (塘子清真寺) is one of the most important Islamic heritage sites in Xundian and a key stop for Kunming Muslim tour programs. First built in the early Ming period and rebuilt in 1927, it is a protected cultural relic of Kunming. The mosque preserves a traditional Chinese palace-style wooden structure with one entrance and two courtyards, offering an excellent example of Islam integrated with Chinese architecture.
The mosque faces east and has a raised-beam prayer hall with a traditional hipped roof. Its three-tier moon-viewing tower is one of the most distinctive architectural features. The entrance couplet expresses both Islamic ethics and patriotic spirit, reflecting the mosque’s historical role in local Hui society.
Inside the mosque, visitors can see wooden carving, Arabic-script decoration, and a style very different from Middle Eastern dome mosques. Important historical items include a wooden plaque written by Bai Chongxi (白崇禧), a Hui Muslim military figure of the Republican period, as well as wartime cultural relics and revolutionary slogans.
Tangzi Mosque is usually open on weekdays during daytime hours. Women should prepare a headscarf before entering the prayer hall. On Fridays, the courtyard may be available for visits, while the prayer hall is reserved for Jumu’ah worshippers. Imam-led cultural talks can be arranged in advance.
Dangui Mosque
Dangui Mosque (丹桂清真寺) is located in Dangui Village of Kedu Town (柯渡镇). Rebuilt during the Qing Guangxu period, it is a protected cultural relic of Yunnan Province and one of Xundian’s most unique Muslim heritage sites.
The mosque is also connected with the Red Army Long March. It served as part of the former headquarters area during the march, and the call tower preserves historic Red Army slogans. This rare combination of Islamic architecture and revolutionary heritage makes Dangui Mosque a highly valuable study site for overseas Muslim groups.
Architectural highlights include a four-storey, three-tier Chinese-style moon-viewing tower, carved wooden doors, old murals, traditional woodwork, and Qing-period Islamic stone inscriptions recording Hui migration history in northeastern Yunnan.
The mosque is close to the Red Army Long March Kedu Memorial Hall, allowing visitors to combine Islamic history, Hui village culture, and Long March study in one stop.
Yuping South Street Mosque
Yuping South Street Mosque (玉屏南街清真寺) is the main urban mosque in Xundian county seat. It has a large Chinese-style prayer hall and can host major Friday Jumu’ah gatherings. The mosque also includes a Hui folk culture display area with Qur’an manuscripts, prayer items, and tools used in halal dried beef production.
It is the most convenient mosque for travelers staying in the county seat. Halal restaurants, shops, hotels, and local markets are within walking distance.

Its quiet wooden hall and local atmosphere make it suitable for light prayer, architectural photography, and travelers who prefer less crowded sites. Nearby halal breakfast shops and beef noodle restaurants are convenient for morning visits.
Dangui Hui Folk Village
Dangui Hui Village is centered around its ancient mosque. Traditional Hui homes, earthen walls, courtyards, halal kitchens, and local workshops create an immersive village atmosphere. With advance arrangements, visitors can observe halal dried beef preparation, youxiang-making, Hui family banquets, and Hui banquet-song performances.
In spring, village fields and flowers around the mosque create beautiful photo scenes for cultural and family travel.
Beidaying Highland Grassland
Beidaying Grassland (北大营草原) is often called a “little Altay” near Kunming. It offers riding, camping, stargazing, meadow views, and cool summer air. Halal restaurants can be arranged in nearby towns along the route, making it suitable for Muslim family outdoor trips.
Xinghe Hot Spring Town
Xinghe Hot Spring Town (星河温泉小镇) is a natural sulfur hot spring area and one of the best winter wellness choices in Xundian. Muslim-friendly hotels and halal dining can be arranged for private groups, especially families and senior travelers.

Practical Travel Guide for Muslim Visitors
From Kunming, private vehicles are the best way to reach Xundian, especially for Muslim groups needing prayer stops and halal meal control. The drive takes about 1.5 hours on expressways with good road conditions. Public buses from Kunming North Bus Station also reach the county seat.
Within Xundian, the main sites are linked by short drives. The county seat, Tangzi, Dangui, and Beidaying can be arranged in a compact route with driving times of about 20–40 minutes between key stops.
For prayer, Tangzi Mosque, Dangui Mosque, and Yuping South Street Mosque are the main stops. In grassland, hot spring, and canyon areas, guides can prepare prayer mats, portable wudu bottles, and quiet hotel rooms. Daily prayer times and qibla direction should be checked in advance.
When visiting mosques, dress modestly. Women should wear a headscarf before entering prayer halls. Do not photograph worshippers, livestream inside prayer areas, or bring alcohol and non-halal food into mosque courtyards.
Best Travel Seasons
April and May are good for countryside flowers, mild weather, and family travel. June to August is the best summer season, with cool temperatures, green grasslands, and wild mushrooms. September and October are excellent for red earth landscapes, clear skies, and cultural study tours. From November to March, hot spring wellness and indoor mosque visits are the main themes, with fewer tourists and easier appointment arrangements.
Travel Tips and Common Mistakes to Avoid
Although Xundian is strongly halal-friendly, Muslim travelers should still choose independent halal restaurants rather than mixed food courts. For longer countryside drives, bring dates, bottled water, and simple halal snacks.
Special imam talks, mosque study visits, and group explanations should be arranged several working days in advance through a qualified travel agency. Travelers should carry passports or identification, especially on highway and township routes where routine checks may occur. Fuel and supplies are easy to find in the county seat, but vehicles should refuel before heading to more rural areas.
